Using filters in OE 6.0
Posted by Rindler Sigurd on September 24th, 2003

I have been using filters in OE 6.0... but they must have very big holes
since all the spam is still coming!

I might have done something wrong, but here is what I did:
In OE: Tools/Message Rules/Mail
After inputting the required parameters, I can see:

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the Subject Line contains 'Microsoft' or 'Patch' or 'Update'
Delete it

After that, messages with Subject lines containing these key words still
arrive by the minute.
Of course, I have rebooted the computer after creating the new rules if that
matters...

What's wrong with this procedure? How to get rid of all these messages
(about 50 every hour) and the attached files WORM_SWEN.A?
My virus checker eliminates this one, but I haven't found a remedy against
the flood of messages. Eventually I might change to another mailreader...

While you are procrastinating about changing mail reader, use
Magic Mail Monitor to delete all the garbage from the server.

Here's a good rule to follow Cut and pasted

By Ron Martell Duncan B.C. Canada

"Here is my OE message rule.

************************************************** ********
It has been 100% effective for the past 2 days:

Where the message body contains 'This is the qmail program'
or 'Undelivered message to'
or 'I'm sorry to have to inform you that I wasn't able to deliver your
message'
or 'I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message'
or 'Undeliverable mail to'
or 'all known security vulnerabilities'
or 'Undelivered mail to' or 'Undeliverable message to'
or 'I'm sorry I wasn't able to deliver your message'
or 'Undeliverable to'
or 'I'm afraid the message returned below'
or 'Undelivered to'
or 'An e-mail delivered to you contained a virus'
Delete it
and Stop processing more rules

Change "Delete it" to "Delete it from the server".

You could set up a message rule only to except mail from those people in
your address book all other junk mail including the Microsoft patch stuff is
deleted at the server, works for me.

I can't do that since I get business e-mail from people I don't know yet.
There must be a way to do it in OE.
If nothing helps, I'll choose another mailreader. Any recommendations for
one that can import OE folders and the Address Book?

There is way around this, set up a new folder called Spam. Then rather than
delete mail from the sever set up rule to send e mail to the spam folder ,
all email from your clients in your address book will go to your inbox and
any spam and new clients will go to the spam folder delete your spam in the
spam folder and left click your mouse on all new client mail to bring up a
menu which lets you add you add new clients to your address book. Next time
around they send a mail it not go into the spam folder but the inbox.

Sounds like too much work to me.

I'd just delete them off the server and not even let them get on my

You do that anytime you want to get your email???
Or do you tell your program (which one?) once and forever to delete all
messages that include certain keywords in the Subject Line?

Hi

I _used_ to do it that way. I use Netscape for a browser/e-mail so
don't have the MS problem others have. Soon I will be upgrading to
Mozilla Firebird (the browser)
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/
and
Mozilla Thunderbird (the mail/news client).
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/

A good _little_ program that I recommend to OE usesers, to
view/delete e-mail from the server is:
PopCorn (freeware)
124kb zipped

Posted by Rindler Sigurd on September 25th, 2003

BTW, why are you going to "upgrade" to Mozilla? Will you use Netscape as
newsreader only? This was the only reason why I stuck with OE, and because I
use OE on a Japanese only system.

I'll have a look into this program if my provider (So-Net = huge SONY owned
ISP) won't filter the spam by this weekend!

Any comparison to "nPOP"?

This old version of NS is a bit buggy.

Oh goodness no. I don't use NS for a reader. I've used Xnews for
years!

You might want to read through Mozilla.org a little bit.
Or if wanting to change readers ask over at news.software.readers for
ideas.

It's nice to have on hand just in case there would be another batch
of worms on the horizon.

I don't know a thing about nPOP.
