Virus restarts machine when deleting
Posted by Dave on February 22nd, 2004

I got an email with the I-Worm Sven B attached as an exe. I saved it to
c:\temp, identified it with my virus checker, then deleted it in Explorer.
Or tried to: as soon as I hit delete the computer restarted. It was no sweat
to delete it from the DOS prompt, but my question is this: how does it
restart the computer without even being run?

btw Running XP Pro SP1

Are you certain that the restart was not just a
coincidence with the deleting of the file?

It doesn't. If you don't run it, it doesn't do ANYthing except take
up hard drive space.

More likely the reboot was caused by something else -- possibly when
you accessed the file to delete it your antivirus scanner
automatically kicked in, tried to scan it, and coughed up a hairballl,
forcing the reboot.
