- VKD Error
- Posted by Sharon on November 18th, 2003
When my son tries to start his computer he gets an error message saying
"Data error reading drive c, Abort, Retry, Ignore
Fail" When I choose Ignore I get a message saying there was an error
initializing device vkd. I tried unplugging and replugging in his
keyboard, trying another keyboard, extracting the Hidvkd.sys file from
the win98 CD during a restart with the startup disk, but nothing works.
Windows will also not start in Safe Mode. I even used the startup disk
to try to reinstall Windows but everything hangs when it gets to
"Copying files needed for Windows SetUp". Anything else I can try?

Start by removing *all* cards and cables (both ends) inside
the box, and reseat them snuggly. Replace any cables that
may be suspect.

VKD is definitely the keyboard driver.
What happens if you try to boot in Safe Mode?
To boot Windows 98 in Safe Mode turn on the computer and press the
Ctrl key as soon as the first information of any kind shows on the
screen. Hold it down until the Windows Startup Menu appears and
select Safe Mode from the menu.
If the computer boots okay in Safe Mode and if the keyboard functions
okay then it is most likely a software issue of some kind, with
something else interfering with the keyboard drive.
If the same error happens in Safe Mode then it is almost certainly a
hardware related problem. And if the keyboard itself is okay, which
you can double check by trying that keyboard on another computer and
also by trying a keyboard on this computer that you know works okay on
another machine, then the problem is with the keyboard controller chip
on the motherboard or the connections to it, and fixing that requires
hands-on attention from a hardware repair tech.
Good luck

The computer won't boot in safe mode either. It gets the same errors. I
tried another keyboard with the same results. I guess I'll play with it
a little more. It's an older computer that probably isn't worth putting
a lot of money into. Thanks for the reply.
