Wanted: old 3-button mouse, with optical!
Posted by Hamish on June 17th, 2008

My hand is accustomed to the Logitech 3-button mouse (no wheel) that I
have on my desktop. Now I would like to get the same 3 button
configuration, for my new laptop. But for the laptop I think I need an
/optical/ mouse. Does anyone have one of those to sell? Corded with
usb preferred, but not mandatory.

I will pay any reasonable price, handling, shipping.

Otherwise I will have to graft the buttons (from a spare 3-button mouse)
onto the chassis of a new optical mouse, over the top of the roller. A
hybrid mouse. Could be fun, or a mess.

I resisted getting a mouse with a wheel for as long as I could, now I can't
use a mouse unless it has a wheel.

Join the 20th Century and get a mouse with a wheel. You won't regret it for
very long. You will find it far easier to get used to the mouse wheel than
to constantly fiddle with the graft job you are thinking of doing.

I don't think the laptop cares if the mouse is optical or has the ball on
the bottom. I prefer the optical mouse because the ball and its rollers are
always dirty, and the mouse feels like it is driving down a dirt road all of
the time.

I would suggest you consider a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. You can just
buy the mouse, but the keyboard and mouse combo pack is reasonably priced,
and you can connect your laptop to a full size monitor when you are at home.
the full size keyboard, mouse, and monitor should prove to be very useful
and more comfortable.

I have the Logitech diNovo Edge keyboard with the mouse pad on the side. I
used the mouse pad for as long as I could (about 9 months) and finally went
back to the standard mouse. I can still utilize the mouse pad if I want to,
but I almost never use it. I do enjoy the wireless keyboard and a wireless
mouse though, I'll never go back to wired devices. The keyboard is
bluetooth, my mouse is the standard MSoft wireless optical mouse with two
buttons and a wheel. The wheel is a button too -- I depress the wheel button
and then I can scroll up and down simply by moving the cursor above or below
the position it was in when I depressed the wheel button. It's a handy
feature that I never use.
