Can anyone suggest a browser that can *trick* a website into thinking it
is Internet Explorer. There are a few sites i like to use (one of
them I absolutley positively HAVE to use). But dont want to use IE
(security issues etc etc).
I currently use Firefox, but it wont let me browse my "absolutley
positively have to use" website, even when I 'allow pop-ups'.

Im running Windoze XP Pro

Cheers,
Bloggs.

ROFL!

But, but, but, Firefox is positively the BE-ALL, END-ALL, of browser
superiority. Ergo? Firefox cannot *possibly* be the problem.

(I read it on teh interweb sew it must be troo)

I've often wondered why people who actually run Windows, sometimes refer to
it as "Windoze"

Kinda like slapping yourself in the face, ain't it?

If I don't respond to this Bloggs post, the terrorists win.

The site doesn't sound all that "have to use" if you're afraid to
use IE on it. Either way, the IE Tab extension sound like what
you need.

Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/ or http://mozdev.org to find
it.

Sites that only "work" in IE are becoming fewer and fewer, it seems to
me.

Install the Firefox PrefBar extension and spoof your User Agent string
as IE. This works on most "IE-only" sites, because all the incompetent
author is doing is reading your UA string.

http://prefbar.mozdev.org/

Here is a picture with the Customize dialog open.
http://k75s.home.att.net/images/prefbar.png
See where it says "Real UA" ? Click there and pick "IE6.0 WinXP"

Test your UA string here:

Look a little deeper.

My question would be:

Why do you have to install anything other than the Firefox Browser for it to
work properly?

<snip>

You have to take into consideration the element you're dealing with in this
newsgroup. To put it bluntly, most of the first-timers here are dumber than
a bag of rocks.

So the predisposition of a lot of folks here to tell them to download and
install and alternate browser of *any* kind, is akin to pissing in the wind
unless your are prepared to hold their hands throughout the entire process.

Nevermind telling them they'll need to install certain extensions and
add-ons in order to make (whatever) work like IE does.

To me? The idea of telling a newb that Firefox/Opera/Netscape/OffByOne/etc.
is the "solution" to his problem, is akin to handing him the keys to a BMW
and telling him not to worry about anything. It'll be just like driving his
old Chevy.

YMMV, of course. :-)

Maybe that will work for you.

I don't get it either! Firefox has its own security problems, though fewer
than IE, but IE has a bigger bull's-eye due to its ubiquity (and the
buttholes who target it due to its popularity). AND...... if all the
Windows bashers were to go Linux, they'd be back onboard in days!

There's at least one extension for FF that allows you to spoof your
user-agent string to make it look like you're using IE. I'm pretty sure
Opera has this feature built-in. In other words, "Yes, the two main
browsers that aren't IE, one of which you're using."

it hits an IE-only web page. (IE-only definition adjustable.)

It's like having a Word document which has an embedded spreadsheet and
Word runs a little piece of Excel to display the spreadsheet. And I've
been told that there's a plugin which allows that for FF 1.

Opera has had a multiple choice of "how it is seen" by MS-
"infected" sites for a long time. Not sure how well it really
works. MS is getting "cleverer" at making parts of the web their
own. (WTF is *.mspx ??????)

FWIW, I have never run into a web page that doesn't display in
anything but IE. Many SAY "viewed best" or some such in their
tiny little MS propaganda buttons, but that's meaningless.

It's an extension called IE Tab, search for it on the Mozilla Update
page (update.mozilla.org). Really handy for accessing Windows Update.

Please note: any pages viewed through IE's "rendering engine" (when
Firefox 2/IE Tab/Netscape 8 runs a web page as IE, it uses IE's
rendering engine) are still just as insecure as if they were viewed in
IE itself. So for security, this doesn't make much of a difference.

Here's the last version I had downloaded, just placed on my web spaces.

Put it in your downloads directory, then from Firefox's menu
File > Open --> and pick this .xpi

Deeper? I haven't run into one in weeks/months. Maybe we surf at
different types of sites. You may do IE-specific ActiveX multi-media
stuff. I don't.

As I explained, the clueless authors check the UA string and redirect
you elsewhere if it's not a valid IE string. You'll find that frequently
the site works just fine in other browsers. About the only thing you
need IE for are ActiveX sites. (And there are some ways around that...)

I have some custom UA strings that I use once in a while, such as:
Mozilla/31.0 (Starship Enterprise NCC-1701)

"I'm sorry, you will have to upgrade to Internet Explorer 4.0 or better"
...so I change to:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
and the site works fine.

I can't dispute that. <g>

Someone has to teach them. Why not us?

This particular OP had no problem with 'extensions'.

Bloggs already has Firefox, if you didn't notice that. No need to tell
him about better browsers, eh?

But of course...
