Web pages wont load via FQDN
Posted by BigAl.NZ@gmail.com on February 10th, 2008

HI All,

This is a weird one that has got me scratching my head.

This computer wont load webpages since this morning. Yet I can type in
the IP address like :

http://202.12.157.146

and it will work.

I have turned off all firewalls, have scanned with Spybot and Adaware
and rolled the computer back 1 week. Still no go.

All works ok in safe mode with networking, and I have also tried
turning everything non microsoft off in MSCONFIG. Still no go.

Please help!

Thanks

-Al

Try:
Start | Run <type in>
CMD /K ipconfig /flushdns
<enter>

Or wait it out, (it flushes every 24 hours)

Damn - add to the list:

A repair install
Added a new NIC

both didnt help.

that, it's the full DHCP fix if there's one for XP now. Or you might try
removing everything in network properties(?) and rebooting.

If you use a router check that the DNS settings are correct.

You are connected to the internet, however, your computer is not able to
query DNS servers for the IP address of a FQDN.

If you have a router set your IP settings to automatic unless you have been
told to manually set your details by your ISP, reset your router.

Also, do this on your computer, In Control Panel > Network Connections >
"Local Area Connection" (Substitute with the correct connection) >
Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > check that both IP address and DNS
are set to automatic

If this doesnt help contact your ISP as they may be able to help

Rgds,
Shaun

Well you seem to be mixing up DNS issues with TCP/IP and the NIC and
repair.

That doesn't work, InterNIC, Ripe and AfriNIC all days it's part of
0.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255 and don't say where it's registered. Maybe
it's my ISP and the US issue to some site just now?

You didn't give the URL that's not working.

It's assumed other options you have like email and oddly enough posting
via GG web are all okay and you aren't using IP addresses for those?

Bad, Good, Good

Not maybe what you wanted to do. rollback is only for specific things.

Fine. If you do an ipconfig/all and note the settings in safe mode and
see it's the same normally.

When not working assumed in MSIE, have you tried a different browser?

It's not a IE hijack, not likely as okay in save mode, but something may
not be loading in safe mode.

Get HijackThis
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php
is
http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/programs.php
or direct

Post log file
http://www.hijackthis.de/en
can't get to page via IP.

or another forum
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Hijack...moval_f27.html
may be okay this way,
http://72.232.218.61/HijackThis_Logs...moval_f27.html

If you are in safe mode open a cmd prompt and run nslookup then type in

www.spywareinfo.com

you get an answer that is the name of the DNS server answering the query
and the answer.

If you try other sites and it's okay, back to the browser.

examples (extra lines not pasted in, just results) -

www.microsoft.com
Name: lb1.www.ms.akadns.net
Addresses: 207.46.193.254, 207.46.192.254, 207.46.19.254, 207.46.19.190
Aliases: www.microsoft.com, toggle.www.ms.akadns.net
g.www.ms.akadns.net

Name: www.sun.com
Address: 72.5.124.61

Name: adaware.com
Address: 64.202.189.170
Aliases: www.adaware.com

Repeat test of nslookup in normal mode.

Do you have a webcache set? Is this different when running in safe mode
or not, can you disable the webcache or switch to another and retest.

Not that one; that is a bogus example.

Presumably you mean that if you use a real site which will answer by IP,
such as http://209.68.27.16/ then you get the page, but if you use a
name like in this example http://www.ipchicken.com/ then you don't
resolve the name to the IP.

That's not a very orderly troubleshooting approach for what seems to be
a nameservice problem.

You have stated earlier that you are a network of XP machines behind a
router. What does the router's config page show?
