- Weird random words appearing and IE6 stopped fetching webpages.
- Posted by El Pea on January 11th, 2004
I'm trying to solve a problem for a friend who has XP home edition
which has suddenly started doing strange things like random words
appearing typing themselves into MS Front Page and Word.
Also the IE6 browser has stopped fetching any webpages even though the
computer can still dial up and send and receive email.
Norton has had a Live Update done and now Norton AV has lost it's
setting for protecting email in and out. The setting can't be
switched back in either.
Is this likely to be a virus in a macro ?
How can it be got rid of if it's not possible to get onto Symantec's
website or any other site that might troubleshoot the problem?
Any ideas gratefully received.

Sounds like Speech recognition is enabled. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default...US;q306537
Click "Start", "Run", type
RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance
and click "OK". Then select "Repair Internet Explorer".
Try running Norton in Safe mode.

I don't think the type of virus is important at this point.
He might be able to use System Restore to go back to an earlier
configuration.

O
Thanks for this.
No sadly the PC is 120 miles away and in the time between me posting
this question they have been working on it in a state of silly panic
and Re-Installed XP completely from scratch.
Plus they re installed Office XP. When they did that , the browser
started working again but they couldn't make Norton do a live update
as they are using an old Norton 2000 on the system that is 2002 XP.
Though it will now browse to a URL the Norton is not the only thing
that won't work. The Office XP won't re-register itself to make it
Kick Start. It tries to go online but fails to get itself keyed open.
It all seems like a. they've got themselves in one stink of a mess and
b. they are stabbing around like a ship with no rudder trying to solve
the problem.
While I spoke to them on the phone their other family computer started
playing up with the blue screen of death. So I think I'm going to bow
out and let them be forced to take it back to their local PC Guru who
may be able to sort the mess for them.
Thanks for your help. I didn't find any clues on the trendmicro site
by the way.
Cheers
El Pea.
