- what happened to my gears??
- Posted by werd on April 1st, 2006
I was coming back from the cinema earlier tonight, and stopped at a
roundabout, I pushed in the clutch fully to put it into 1st and it wouldnt
go!, so I tried 2nd, wouldnt go, 3rd and 4th wouldnt too, it only went into
5th gear!!!,,,so I managed to get it around the roundabout in 5th! and drove
for a while till traffic lights. At this point it would also go in 3rd and
4th but not 1st or 2nd. Anyway after sometime it would go into 1st and 2nd
aswell and seemed ok till I just got home now.
Does anyone know what on earth was going on, or is something on its way
out??
Thanks for any advice.

Being that it is 2006 and the car is 1996, the ten year difference is
probably a sign that something is on the way out or actually is out.
What...I have no idea. Cars are for driving. When they don't work, your
friendly Mazda man is the one to see. I wish I knew more about the darned
things, but I don't. Good luck.

I don't know if that car has a hydraulic clutch or a manual clutch but it
could be as simple as an adjustment, or it may need a new clutch. If it were
the transmission you probably would have known about the trouble long before
it quit. If you're not a mechanic, take it to the shop.

What MrB said and:
Next time this happens double clutch; Your synchronizer gears might be
worn and this would help.
Push in the clutch, put in neutral and let off the clutch, push in the
clutch and put in the next gear, release the clutch.

This is not the proper news group for this topic.
To make things short, if the clutch is working properly, it is possible that
the synchronizers may be getting worn, or the main shaft bearing is worn to
the point where the main transfer shaft is not allowing proper meshing. If
the teeth on any of the gears are too warn, this can also causes problems
with engagement.

You have received all sorts of 'advice' from other posters about worn
synchro's/gears/shafts/clutches and other pseudo claptrap 'causes'
The only one who gave you good advice was the one that said to take it to
your dealer/mechanic.
However having 'nitpicked':
"Does anyone know what on earth was going on"
No no one 'knows' what is going on, they likeyly weren't there and haven't
examined your vehicle.
But the 'possibility' is your gear selection mechanism became disarranged
and travelling in 5th followed by you subsequent movement of the gear lever
caused the linkages to joggle back into place.
(must have been difficult getting it going though)
"is something on its way out"
No not 'on' its way out, but 'has' broken.
If the 'cause' was the suggested gear shift linkage failure, then the parts
'have' either worn, broken or come unscrewed.
Having offered my pick of 'causes' it would be nice if you would post back
to the group what did go wrong when you've had it fixed.
Whatever the cause I wish you the best of luck getting it repaired.
Cheers
Paul.

allowed to drop too low as the clutch wears or the clutch cylinder is
leaking. Check clutch fluid level and top up if required. If level keep
dropping, check for leaks.
If the hydraulic fluid is OK then a second hand gearbox is cheap, especially
if you can get a friend to fit it for you.

And with that tranny the shift fork bushings are probably crappo.
Replacement parts have bearings. It's probably the same tranny as in the
Ford Contour.
And, your sig goes on the end of the message.
