Why is my Drive Image so big?
Posted by Ritter 197 on April 12th, 2008

I am trying out R-Drive Image software and have a question:

My actual C drive has :
Used 42GB
Unused 182GB
Total 224GB

But the IMAGE created has 92 GB. Why is it so much larger than the used
portion of the actual drive?

I am using Windows XP and 3 GB RAM and a HP Dual CPU 4200 + processor.

If the tool making the image, can present a display of the number
of partitions, and the files inside each partition, you may be
able to figure out what it backed up that way. There are probably
plenty of things on a Windows computer, that could have a hidden
attribute, or even a whole hidden partition. Like, there may be
a recovery partition on the drive, as you mention it is an HP.

Did you select sector-by-sector image - so if not contiguous - it is
backing up "unused (empty) sectors" too ? If so, try defrag first.
