- Win 98 function keys problem.
- Posted by Jack on January 30th, 2005
I'm running Windows 98 first edition. The Start button on my keyboard is no
longer funcioning, although I can still use the mouse to select the start
menu. I also get a bell ringing sound when I try to do a Control-C to copy
some text. In addition Alt-Tab is not changing the asctive window,.

Also it seems very suspicious that only the function keys are asffected.I've
tried scanning for a virus but found nothing.

That sounds as the keyboard (hardware) problem nevertheless.
Try to knock all the keys which you can't verify by simple typing (Win
key and the pairs of Ctrl, Alt, Shift keys in the first place): probably
one of them is jammed, an will be released after that.

Bang your keyboard rather violently a few times and see if it helps. If it
does, get another keyboard.
If it doesn't, get another keyboard.

Someone may laugh at that, but there've been a number of times that I've
dislodged staples, paperclips, food particles, etc., and got the keyboard
working again. Of course, the next step is to disassemble and clean it
properly <g>
