Win 98 - outlook express freezing up the PC
Posted by advid on May 2nd, 2004

..... on my Dad's PC - everytine he opens Outlook Express the PC
freezes completely - ctrl/alt/del do nothing - only way out is to
switch off at the mains.
W98 then re-starts with scandsk...etc.

I've cheched for viruses - 100% OK /scandsk runs OK /registry (used
Registry Mechanic) is 100% ok...

How do I remove and reinstall OE -(I have the original w98 CD) ????

It's probably not the OE program itself. (Hey, it *could* be, but I'd be
very surprised!) Most likely it's the data files...one of them is damaged.

What I'd try is moving all my OE data files into a safe place, then starting
OE with no data files in it's normal store folder. It would create new
folders (empty, of course). Note: This DOESN'T affect the address book.
Everything else is gone though. But by moving them, not deleting them, you
could import the folders back in one at a time to see where the problem is
(that is if you need to keep any of the mail that is stored.)

Your store folder is probably in C:\Windows\application
data\identities\{some_big_stupid_name}\Microsoft\O utlook Express. Copy them
some place safe, then delete them.

*IF* OE restarts okay with them gone, then we (TINW) can work on recovering
the old data if you want to.

You have a number of options from Control Panel; Add/ Remove

Under Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools (*not* Outlook
Express); double-click the entry, for options such as "Repair" and
'Restore previous version'.
