- Win XP question
- Posted by Joe on December 16th, 2006
I am looking to buy a copy of Win XP Pro on ebay, but not too sure which
one/s to go for. I can't afford to pay for the retail version, but I see the
OEM version on ebay. I thought OEM meant I can only use it one
machine...'forever, and it's not transferable? The thing is, I will be
upgrading my system in a couple of months, i.e. motherboard, processor and
memory. Can I still use this OEM version when I upgrade the machine's
internals then?
TIA.
Joe.
P.S.
If this won't work, does anyone know where I might get a cheap legit copy of
Win XP Pro?

P.P.S.
What's the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit versions? Which should I
get?
Some of these ebay deals come with a COA....'does that mean it's legit?
This is so confusing.
Joe.

Someone else posted recently, possibly in this group, that they bought
XP on eBay. After installation, they got the dreaded 'you don't have a
legitimate copy of Windows' message. Caveat emptor.
Save your pfennigs until you can afford a real copy from a local store.

Computer processors have been improving over the years, from 8 to 16 to
32 bit. This improves how many memory addresses they can use, and makes
the 'pipe' wider for moving data around and actually processing it.
Most Windows desktop machines are 32-bit processors. A few are 64-bit.
If you bought a 64-bit machine, you'd probably know.
Almost all Macs are 64-bit.
64-bit processors can handle much larger amounts of RAM and data.

You are best off saving up a little longer and buying a copy that you know
will work, and the source is legitimate.
