Windows 2000 Professional Pop-ups
Posted by warlock on December 21st, 2005

I bought a brand new, unopened, still sealed in the box copy of Windows 2000
Professional. I bought this operating system software for my new system:
Intel 875DPZLK motherboard, P4 2.26 GHZ processor, Creative Labs Sound
Blaster 24 bit sound card, GeForce AGP video card, etc. I have installed
the Windows 2000 on a Western Digital 3.3GByte hard drive - reformatted,
scandisk, and surface scan first - and used my old system which is a
Pentium 1 running at 166 MHz. The installation was clean with no errors. I
configured Internet Explorer for my internet provider and I am able to
send/receive mail, browse newgroups, and surf the net. However, every few
minutes I get a pop-up saying I have register problems and I have to go to a
web site and download their software. I notice that the software is not
free. Should I just download this software? I am thinking of buying
Windows XP and using it instead of 2000. Does XP have these pop-ups every
few minutes too?

Thanks

What software are you talking about? Who owns the software is it MS or are
you talking about some third party vendor software.

It could happen for XP too since you have not identified who or what is the
software you are talking about.

an advertiser is attempting to trick you via a pop-up window via your
internet connection. if your getting this when your not connected to the
internet, then you've gotten some spyware/adware on your system. by the
way, are you running an anti-virus or anti-spyware app? remember to wear
protection!

BIG NO

These popups have nothing to do with the OS.
The popups most likely via the "messenger" service.

You need to disable the messenger service to stop the popups.

I agree with the others who suggest that the Messenger service is the
culprit, not to be confused with the "Other" Messenger.
Visit this site to find out all about it.

I was plauged with the messenger pop ups with XP, advising me of registry
problems, viruses etc, download the software etc.
Simply turning off Messenger in XP solved it.....pure bliss.

Thanks to all responders. I downloaded that utility from shoot the
messenger and now I can use the computer without a pop up message every few
minutes. I never saw these pop-ups with 95 or 98 and didn't know what was
going on.

Use google toolbar, thats great over this year has blocked over 500
popups and I use norton to.

If they are windows messenger then you can disable this in the options
Search google for stop messenger popups, dont pay for it, it can b
disabled by unticking an option, cant think which one
