- Windows 98 Explorer sorting by Size by default all of a sudden
- Posted by Cloud Burst on July 23rd, 2003
Can someone please tell me how to set the default sort
in Explorer back to sort by Name? All of a sudden, it
is displaying every folder I open by Size instead of by
Name.
This is especially annoying when I want to open a file
and it displays a list of file names sorted by size.
I'm not sure but I think this may have started when I
tried to install Acrobat Reader 6. This may very well
be a red herring, however.
Thanks.

Thanks, but your suggestion is only a temporary fix. Every
time I open Explorer, it reverts to sort by Size.
I'm guessing it's some Registry entry, but I don't know...

After doing as trout suggested, set "Folder Options" to show all folders the
same way as that one, then close Explorer.

In Folder Options, have you checked "remember each folder's View
setting"? Used the option to make all folders the same?

Install the free MS tweakUI,

and use it's,"Repair" TAB to repair the system files and re-boot.
MS explorer has never been very good so you may also like to try the
free 2X explorer,
http://netez.com/2xExplorer/
Which is better written, more robust and has many more features and
does not suffer from the large file manipulation problems inherent in
the MS version.
Do,"Not" use the beta version but the normal one.

Perhaps "a long time ago" is when you might have mentioned that.

Sorry.
I've tried everything I can think of. Now I'm more than ever
thinking it's a registry problem. Just don't know how to fix it.

It's just that it's a fairly high-traffic newsgroup.
Generally, there's a 'window of opportunity' with each post, when
people will look at it afresh, and see what they can do. It helps to
know what you have done.
Perhaps one of the people that have responded in the thread, or
someone wandering through aging threads, will come up with an answer for
you (but not me, as I've reserved this part of the evening to be
unnecessarily unpleasant to people at random). I think that would be
swell.
If not; ask again in a new thread, and give all the information
available up front.
