- Windows 98 reinstall
- Posted by joni on July 31st, 2003
I reinstalled win98 cause the whole system was playing up (wont go into
that)
windows detected the original windows folder and I choose a different folder
for the fresh installation..
c:\windows.001 (something like that)
Now that I have the machine back up and running none of my programs are
there
i.e. msword / excel etc:- but they are still on the drive in the program
folder
none of my drivers are installed either for the modem etc
Is there an easy method when this happens, Like copy the old reg file across
onto the new installation
or copy a file that contains all the windows drivers across.
Thanks for any help cause this will save me hours reinstalling software

Update the drivers and choose 'Have Disk'. Point the wizard at
your *old* '\windows\inf' or '\windows\inf\other' folder.

for the modem etc. by trawling through the old registry and then copying
those files across to the new set-up and editing the new registry. It would
take longer then re-installing the drivers! The windows CD should have a
fair collection of drivers for most hardware, if the hardware is newer than
windows 98 then a quick search of the internet usually turns up the drivers.
The original install disks that came with the PC or hardware should have the
necessary drivers, or any back-ups you made of old installers (admittedly
unlikely). When you start up, does windows recognise any hardware you
haven't installed the drivers for yourself? Sometimes an easy(ish) way of
getting something working even if Windows doesn't install the newest
drivers.
I hope some of this helps,
Ieuan

Actually, I did try this once. All I can say is that it's easier,
IMO, to reinstall the software.
