- windows 98 safe mode
- Posted by BOB HOLLOWAY [ UK]. on September 23rd, 2005
My daughter has "altered" her PC,and it will only start up and run in "safe
mode".
We have the Windows 98 CD ROM, but when it is inserted nothing happens.
I have read the Idiots Guide to Windows 98 but it does not help this idiot!
if YOU can please do.
thanks

Have you tried a to restore to a previous registry point?
From the boot menu, select Command Prompt Only, then enter
"scanreg/restore" (without quotes) and you should be prompted to select
a previous working version the registry to restore.

In Windows 98? I never knew Windows 98 HAD such a function.

Just restart pressing the key for your machine that gives you various
starting mode options.
On mine its F8
You'll get a list of options one is safe mode, one other will be normal.
just go to that option and it'll return to normal, not necc to go to earlier
registry version, which can sometimes loose settings.

You probably never buggered-up a win98 system as many times as I have.
Unless you were really dedicated to it.

I can't actually /remember/ buggering up a W98 system (but then I can't
remember what happened last tuesday so that's not surprising!) I do know
that the onslaught of viruses and malware seemed to appear when W2K came out
and that W98 wasn't really affected by them....!

No, I'm still using this machine, after seven years, and have never
had an infection. The main problem has been overheating and hard
shut-downs.
I should have replaced the fans years ago, plus it's an oddly-narrow
case. Now, I just run it with the side off, and a desktop fan pointed at
the back. But it's nice to be able to shove stuff in and out without
having to ask my OS's permission, or have it demand that I phone its
owner.

An IT tecnition once told me to keep the tower off the ground, put a book
under it, as this kept out the fluff.
Remember the old days, when 98 first came out. The orignal, steam driven
version used to break down, crash and refuse to print all the time. By the
time they finished the updates it was a fine, but version 1 quite something.
