Windows Critical Updates Fail
Posted by Martin Knight on July 31st, 2004

Has anyone else experienced Windows' XP failure to update itself with
"Critical Updates" or even the Driver or Windows updates?

I get a big red X and a notice that says "No Updates Were Installed", etc.

I haven't been able to install any updates for about 2 months now and I'm
behind with 6 critical updates.

Thanks,
Martin

Regclean has not been tested on Windows XP, and
is no longer supported by Microsoft -- Microsoft even
used to warn about using it with certain applications
installed.

Besides not being a complete registry cleaner -- it only
checks CLSIDs -- it is NOT a safe registry cleaning option
for Windows XP.

If Windows downloads them to a temp folder and tries to install through
Windows Update in the browser I'll get the Big Red X failure notice. If I
download them myself from the MS Download center to a folder of my choice
and try to install. I get an error message that says it has not passed
Windows Logo testing.

How does an illegal one work if it has to be registered with Microsoft to
works after 30 days?

I thought for sure I would be able to fix it when all the stuff on this
page. I did every step, one at a time and tried to get the updates. I did it
all rename files, start Cryptographic services, rename catroot2 folder,
reregistered a bunch of DLLs, removed some -s -h attribs, verified
certificates, even imported a certificate from another computer. Still same
problem.

Can one reinstall Windows XP to the same folder like you can with Windows 98
to reinstall all the original files? If so does anyone recommend it?

Hate to be with out these critical updates. With my luck I get caught with
some Trojan, worm or virus that will wreck everything and then I have to do
it the long way.

FYI: It also removes a valid entry in the DirectX section of the registry
that handles the joystick...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9218732 6-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\InProcHandler32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\gchand.dll"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9218732 6-72B4-11d0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\ProgID]
@="Game Controllers CPL Handler"

Yes, like I said, it's just a (Win95) CLSID cleaner that's
never been tested in XP, and is no longer supported
by Microsoft.
