- Windows ME
- Posted by AnonyMouse on September 25th, 2006
I know Windows ME is completely poop, but I recently downloaded a copy
of Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 and was trying out different versions of
Windows on it. I wanted to check out ME, and I thought I had it when I
found a copy of ME on the sixth or seventh page of search results for
"Windows ME" on isohunt.com--I downloaded the torrent and burned it to
CD, but I not only botched the CD job, I also found out that I had
downoaded some foreign (i.e., Russian or something along those lines)
version of Windows ME, and I couldn't understand anything in the setup
program, especially the error messages that I think came from the
botched CD job. Anyway, if any of you either know of an English Windows
ME torrent, would you be able to post the link to it here? And if you
have a copy of the Win ME install CD--you can always make it into an ISO
file and use a BitTorrent client to make it into a torrent. Anyway, any
help is greatly appreciated.

It is beyond me why anybody would want to wallow in complete poop. With so
many superior operating systems available, we have here a bloke with
masochist tendencies that wishes for Windos ME, yes, the one that even
Microsoft aborted.
Do yourself a favor and download, for FREE even, Ubuntu, Xandros, or
OpenSuSE. You'll save yourself the indignation of having Microsoft call you
a pirating thief and your computer will finally run reliably and safe from
viruses, worms, and trojans.

Let me get this straight:
I have Windows XP on my computer as my main OS, and I only planned on
using ME under a virtual machine to get acquainted with it--if one is to
know about how to solve computer problems (which I am often called on to
do by friends and family), they must understand all the Microsoft OS's.
I have never even seen a Windows ME computer in my life, as far as I
know--so I would like to at least know my way around it and compare it
to other versions of Windows.
And on top of all this, why I would want to wallow in complete poop is
none of your business. :-) I do not have "wishes for Windows ME", it's
just that I would like to know if anyone has a copy that I could use to
check it out. That's what virtual machine software is for, right?

Windows ME is almost exactly the same as 98SE.
Except that it is a piece of crap, tilting every 5 minutes.
It didn't last a week on my system.
Want to "learn" something?
Play with 98SE.

I have at this very moment a HP Pavillion 7860 dinosaur with
512 Mb of memory ( it wont support any more)
Windows ME on a HP recovery disk which is full of HP advertising crap and
"Wannadoo" rubbish which has to be weeded out every time ME spits the dummy
(every 8 months or so).
ZAPro (Firewall) and McAfee Security Center (anti Virus), which is like
mixing oil and water.
Loads of utilities all running at the same time and they all conflict
spectacularly with each other.
Outlook Express which is used for email and news and only screws up now and
then.
Running this lot this is tantamount to always taking a large container of
Nitroglycerine with you every time you go cross-country on the Harley.
Windows ME is extremely educational though and highly recomended for
advanced Masochists.
The "old" computer,a Shitec Pentium 1 with 256 Mb ram and 8Gb HD, is still
running quite happily on Windows 95+ and has not crashed in the last 7
years, ( I have an oxygen bottle permanently fixed to it)!.
When will Micro$oft release an updated OS that will do everything that 95
did but will remain simple and stable and reliable? and small enough that I
don't habe to have 1024Mb just for the OS!

And where in the title for this newsgroup did you see "warez"?

except for the system restore feature and no ability to boot to real dos
it's simply
a resource-hungry and less stable version of win98

I haven't run ME in over a year now, but I ran it for 5 years before, and
it is not complete "poop" providing you do some tweaking, all of which is
well publicized on the Web. After being properly tweaked, ME blows 98SE out
of the water. Faster, more reliable, and smarter. M$'s mistake was loading
it up with all the bloat to try and make it look like W2K. Or, maybe they
did it on purpose, hoping that people who bought it would throw up their
hands and finally buy W2K.

We are still running ME although we are experimenting with a few distros
of Linux. I found several other programs that either or not compatible
or slow down ME besides Norton software.

Actually I would call it Win98TE (Third Edition)
Microsoft added some features which turned out to be annoyances in the
end because of this ME was a failure.
I too put my CD in the bottom drawer after using it for a few days.
Some months back I came across certain utilities for removing these
features (?) and playing around with them I got a resultant Windows
that I call Win98TE. It is very stable, no BSOD in the last several
months it has worked three of my machines - and I do a lot of audio
and video edit. It also has more and better drivers than 98SE.
If you do what I did, you perhaps stand a better chance to learn more.

I don't know why I keep harping back to this - maybe because I was a Win ME
user for 5 years? I think Microsoft intentionally sabotaged ME, to force
people to switch over to NT, which is what they were going to continue
with.
After making the necessary tweaks, ME runs like a dream. A registry hack
can even restore complete MS-DOS ability, since it was never removed to
begin with, simply hidden.

If there is no MSDOS Prompt icon possible in Me what is that MSDOS
Prompt icon doing on my screen on my Me computer? Use it a lot. I have a
lot more reliance on some old DOS pgms than some of the Windows
replacements. One of the things I do frequently is run "ping" or
"telnet" from DOS. I guess I could get these things to start in windows
but it is easier to see what I want in a directory to send or receive
via DOS than it is with windows.

But if you have to boot to get that DOS prompt why not just pop in a DOS
floppy? Just as easy to keep one handy. I always keep such a disk handy
for my intel machines and they allow me to boot up in DOS.

Well, knowledgeable people have made it all quite simple.
Axel's site has all the tweaks
http://www.mdgx.com/
Then the following two utilities will do all that is needed.
http://downloads.planetmirror.com/pu...c/srpsetup.exe
http://www.lucifiar.net/enhance/download/wmedos.zip
After that you can also delete every occurrence of resto* and pchealth
from the C:\Windows folder.
Now the WinME starts with the menu just as Win98 starts when F8 key is
pressed while booting. And it works beautifully, and that is windows
98 TE (Third Ed.)

So after all this blabbering, long story short...does anyone know where
I might be able to find a copy of Windows ME?
