Windows XP Pro Login help
Posted by BIGEYE on August 7th, 2005

I have inherited a laptop through the previous user having left the company
I work for. The laptop has Windows XP Pro installed.
When I start the laptop I am required to press Ctrl-Alt-Del before I can
start using it.
After I do this I am presented with a box requesting Username & Password.
The previous username is already filled in and he left me the password. I
get in to windows using his details. I set myself up as an administrator but
cant find any other user accounts listed to change/delete them.
How do I get my own name into the username/password box and delete the
details of the previous user?
TIA

How about ringing your company's IT Support desk?

The ctrl-alt-del may be because the system had been on a domain. If so, the
first thing I'd do is remove the domain information. Right-click My
Computer, select Properties. Click on Computer Name tab, then change the
login from a domain to a workgroup. (I don't have XP Pro running here at the
moment, but you should be able to figure it out.) That may be enough to stop
the 3-finger salute. If not, post back. I haven't done that in a while, but
I should be able to remember if needed <g>

Set yourself up as administrator? Don't use the adminsitrator mode. Password
protect it, and leave it for emergencies. Create a NEW user account for
yourself. Control Panel, User Accounts, Create, etc. Yes, you can probably
allow yourself administrator rights, but that's not the same as the
administrator login.

While you are in the user account applet, you can remove other previous
users. Click on the account, click on change, click on delete.

In other words, don't try to clean up or modify or change the name on the
previous account. Start with a clean one. Delete the old ones. It will give
you the option to save data files when you delete the other user accounts.

Does it have a button labeled with "more ..." or "advanced"? If you press
it, do you see a 3rd field "domain"?
Is your laptop (regularly) attached to a (maybe wireless) corporate network?

IF there is a IT support in your company, ask them - you are probably not
even permitted to modify. Otherwise, rightclick on "workplace" and select
"management". Then setup "local users".
