- winlogon.exe

Hiya
Installed XP home on Intel P4 with 512Mb. Then came to install a dial up
connection to Wanadoo.
The internal modem connects and you can surf ok.
When you disconnect, the system becomes very very slow.
The task manager show 99% CPU on process winlogon.exe
I have virus checked and found none.
Anyone seen issues like this ?
Regards
Cub

If the file is actually named "winlogin.exe" instead of "winlogon.exe" then
yes, I've seen this. And it is possible that other malware has caused your
AV software to issue a false OK message. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826955 and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826234 for additional information.
Do you have a firewall installed/active? If not, see the "Note" part of
step 1. under Prevention in KB826234 for help in activating the XP firewall
on your dialup connection.
In addition to the AV scan you should check for other malware on the system
that could be "phoning home" using your modem. Start here for a quick
online check: http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
Last, your modem automatically creates a .log file in your Windows folder.
Check that for unusual entries/activity after you begin the Disconnect
sequence.

Check the settings for your modem and/or your connectoid for your ISP. What
does the modem .log file tell you about the extra (post-offline command)
activity?

Update...
It looks like the internal modem is the cause, I have installed the internal
modem out of spare unit and connections/discon's are fine.
If i have time i will see what the cause is, it might just be a driver issue
but WTF ! it works
thanks to all
