WinXP Home SP2 logs in then right away logs off
Posted by Andrew on October 17th, 2004

I've got a WinXP Home SP2 machine that first refused to logon on any
account, after using EBCD password recovery cd, I was able to get to get
login prompt to work, however, it starts to logon, then it logs off, i see
the wallpaper, but no icons or anything that far. Any ideas?

Any ideas?

I know this sounds bad but get XP Professional w/SP 2. WinXP Home Edition
sucks...

You can always put in the XP install CD and boot off the cd and take the
*Repair* path and install the entire O/S over itself and lay it back down
on the machine. That will install the O/S intact and should leave all the
other programs and applications installed on the machine as is and
everything will still work as before. You'll need to apply the SP2 again as
it will be gone.

Hopefully, that will get you out of your problem.

You have no idea what you are talking about. XP Home and Pro have
identical internals, the only major difference in the advanced networking
options in Pro (such as joining a domain).

The repair path? That just brings up a prompt.... I've traditionally used
the install over feature, however, this install disk wants me to reformat
the drive, not install over.

I use XP Pro but I'll say any install CD I have ever used for installing
the MS O/S like Win NT, 2K and XP Pro or Home has the option to not format
the HD before installing the O/S.

Maybe, the link will help you.

To get the effect of repairing an install without wiping data, choose to
install the OS (98, 2000, XP, whatever) like a new install but pick the old
folder to install to. This will effectively do a "repair install".

if you start to run setup you will be asked if you wish to repair an
existing installsation using the repair console
answer no to this option and continue to setup
you go past the option where you press f8 to accept the conditiuons then you
are given the option to press r to repair
this overwrites all the system files without losing any data or drivers etc
hope this helps

I would look for the "absolute path for winlogon/userinit" issue on google
then. Has the harddrive signature and therefore drive letter changed?

The only that sucks is your advice. I use both...and other than connecting
to a domain at work, I find no difference. Okay, I know that "technically"
there are others, such as dual processor support, etc., but WGAF? The CORE
is the same, the way it works is the same. If it walks like a duck, and it
quacks like a duck...

Ummm...and why would that bother most home users? Again, that's a
network/office use type of issue, and seldom affects anyone using a personal
PC at home.

I might suggest running SFC /SCANNOW from the cmd prompt in safe mode.
(System File
Checker - replaces damaged files with the originals. Have that setup CD
ready.)

great chance to spread, eventually taking down whole ISP networks. The real
dilemma (why not even Microsoft bothers to educate users to _not_ run
internet surfing/downloading/chatting as admin) lies in the missing
priviledge separation. It's not completely Microsofts fault that programs
store preferences inside program directories or even the main windows
directory, or in the (goddammed) registry hive HKLM. But due to DOS/win9x
inheritage and legacy demands Microsoft never bothered to implement such a
model, maybe because they would have to redesign the whole OS line and
render a lot of third-party programs useless. Therefore it's a great deal
to make commonly used (even not---too-outdated Microsoft) programs work as
non-admin user, which is only affordable in a corporate/business
environment to protect the Innocent (TM).

That doesn't happen with .Net solutions using the .Netframework and MS
