- Wireless network with DirecWay
- Posted by Amanda on November 24th, 2003
Hi,
I've looked through quite a few posts and I haven't found anything
for my problem, so sorry if it's a repeat.
I have a Dell 8100 running Windows XP Pro (upgraded from ME) and a
Dell Inspiron running Windows XP Pro. I also have DirecWay
Satellite internet. I have successfully setup my computers on a
wireless network so that I can get into the two computers over the
network. The problem is that I can't use the internet over the
network. I have done everything that the DirecWay site says to do
and followed all of the Help files on my computers.
The funny thing is this: As long as I don't set up the host
computer to share the DirecWay connection I can use the network
between the two computers and access the internet on the host
computer. As soon as I enable the sharing on the DirecWay
connection, though, I can't access the other computers over the
network and I can't use the internet on the host computer.
I don't know what the problem is. According to the DirecWay site, I
should be able to set up the connection to be shared over the
wireless network.
I don't know if it will help, but I'll give some info on my router.
I have to directly connect it to the host computer but I can use
wireless access from my laptop. It is also set up so that the
internet connection can be shared without the host computer being
turned on, if I could do that. In order for that to work, I have to
plug the modems directly into the router, which I can't do because
the modems use a USB plug and the router uses an Ethernet
connection. (on a side note, is there an adapter to turn a USB plug
into an Ethernet connection?) Even with all of this in mind, the
instructions on the DirecWay site are specifically for sharing over
the connection not through the router, so I just don't understand
why it won't work.
If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. And I'll be glad
to give more information, if needed.

Here's the link for the DirecWay info. I'm not sure it will work.
I used the copy shortcut option to get it and I'm not sure it's
right. Also, it's on a DirecWay site and only DirecWay PCs can get
to it. You'll have to cut and paste it, I'm still figuring out how
to work my newsreader. Sorry.

I hope this helps. Let me know if there's anything else you need.
And I really appreciate the help.

The newer systems have a either net based modem so all you would need
to do is plug the satellite modem into a standard wireless router and
you are ready.
If you have the old wywtem with the USB modem then you will nedd to
use some kind of internet shareing like Sygate on the host computer
then plug in a wireless gateway or router and it should work the same.
