I'm not sure of the answer to your problem but it is NOT a good idea to save
documents on the desktop as this is very susceptible to corruption. Save
them in your My Documents and put a SHORTCUT on the desktop, not the
document.

Double click on the Word document entry in Folder Options /
File types, then double click on 'Open'. Ensure that there is
an "%1" (including quotes) at the end of the command line.
Eg.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Word\Winword.exe" "%1"
Alternatively, there may be an option to associate .doc
file within Word preferences - I don't use it, so I can't check.

Hi,
Is there anyone who can solve the following problem?
I save many of my Word documents on the (Windows) desktop. When I
double-click one of these shortcuts, the document opens in Word.
The other day I did something wrong, I don't know what, but the icons
of the Word shortcuts took on a different shape and colour. I tried to
sort this out, but failed. In the end I selected a Word shortcut, held
down Shift and right-clicked it. I then chose Open with and selected
WinWord in the Open with box. I also ticked the check box Always use
this program .….. The Word shortcuts look all right again, but when I
now click a Word shortcut on the desktop Word opens without displaying
the document.
My question is: how can I get the Word shortcuts back to normal, so
that the document will be opened in Word?
Thanks,
Jason

I would bet money, uninstalling and reinstalling word would do it.
Seems a bit extreeme, but its also an almost gaurenteed fix.

Hi everybody,
Thanks very much for your responses, much obliged!
No, I can't roll back unfortunately, because I'm running Windows 98 SE
(which I should have mentioned but forgot).
The shortcuts are icons that contain articles I copied on the
internet. I saved those articles as icons on the desktop, so they do
not point to documents on my hard disk. Perhaps I should not have used
the word shortcut.
The correct answer (which does not mean that the others are not
correct - but uninstalling and reinstalling is quite a job) was the
following:
Reregister Word in Windows. Use Start, Run and type in
winword /r
and press enter. This will reregister Word.
BTW, saving documents to the Desktop is VERY VERY dodgy. The Desktop
is not a safe environment. Always save to the HDD.

This tip did the trick! So I'm very pleased.
Thanks again all,
