Word, Word Perfect, Excel, Calc, And Some Others Load Fonts, Printer Properties, and Setup Slow.

Some people have been asking about the problem where when they are selecting
to view, or change the font setup, or setup the page parameters, or the
printer parameters, in their word processor, or spreadsheet these functions
are very slow.

There may be an instance where Word, Word Perfect, Excel, Calc, and some
others load fonts, printer properties, or the printer setup very slowly.

If this is the case, there may be a corrupt reference file. In the case of
Word, this can happen if the file "Normal.doc" is corrupted. A way to fix
this, is to close Word, and then delete this file, and re-start Word again.
A new reference file should be created. You must check the support
information for the others, to know about their reference files.

If the fault is not the reference file, check to see if when the request is
made, that the software is accessing the network. If this is the case, check
to see if the computer is using a network printer as its default. If so, the
software is most likely checking the font set of the parameters of the
printer driver in the print server device. This is to determine the validity
of the font set, and printer parameters. This can cause a delay.

If the above about the network printer verification is correct, this can be
proven by installing a local printer driver as the default printer driver on
the computer. The verification actions should then be very quick.

If these actions are still very slow, then there are other faults. The
repair utility for the software would have to be run, or parts of it, or the
complete software package may have to be installed. The particular situation
would determine the remedy at this point.

Just curious JerryG, where are you getting this stuff? Are you a fiction
writer as well? All of that babbling below and you got the file name for
Word's default template wrong and missed some very obvious causes for slow
font loading, like, MAYBE there are to many fonts installed in the fonts
folder. Don't give up your day job...
