I don't know if this is a question for this NG or if another may be of
better assistance. If so can someone please direct me there and apologies if
I'm in the wrong group. But I have been getting incessant phone calls and
I'm and always have been X-directory, so I wonder how people get X-directory
numbers because this is really annoying me and I'd like to find out. TIA

A number of telemarketing companies have auto-diallers which simply add a 1
to the previous number dialled and keep going until someone is fool enough
to answer. It's intended as a way of getting around the 'no-call' lists,
but it's still worth getting yourself registered with a relevant authority
that administers such a list wherever you are.

It looks like you are in the United Kingdom. If so, visit
www.tpsonline.org.uk and register your number(s) with them.

If you are with BT, you could ask if your problem qualifies you for call
interception, that way the operator can deal with the nuisances for you and put
through the list of numbers that you authorise.
If the service still exists ofcourse.
