You can still have one made with it from places like Dell or Lenovo. I
bought 3 from Dell and all 3 had issues and I found customer support is "we
got your money so too bad if things don't work", so I would never buy
anything from them again. I have heard one person complain about Lenovo too,
so who knows. I sure hope MS comes out with an OS that works with the new
one they have on deck.

I asked a clerk at Best Buy about getting XP on a new Dell pc. He said that
MS said only Vista will be available. I asked how many people have asked to
have Vista pc's changed over to XP. He said "too many". I think that says
volumes. A while back, I went to the Dell order site-they still offered XP,
but I am sure that is past now. It had to be a special order at that time.
My own desktop is a Dell XPS 410 w/ XP home. We also have a new Dell laptop
with Vista that has been configured to look like windows. The biggest pain
in the butt is when shutting down. Some of you will know what I mean. I
think Vista is the worst thing MS has come up with in years.

I accidentally sent this message without putting my text in the body of the
message. I attempted to delete it
before it got out to the world but looks like it went out just to spite me..
for this I apologize.
My intended text was to ask if anyone has read any articles on what the
future is for xp. I read somewhere where sellers like dell and lenovo will
be allowed to supply xp on their systems they sell for a longer period than
a consumer can buy xp off the shelf like from newegg or other sources.
Anyone read any specific dates?
I do pc support in my area and tell my customers to stay with xp if they are
purchasing a new system from Dell... just still too many incompatabilities
with vista ... especially if they are using things like photoshop or some of
the video editing software in a current xp environment. Vista may require
them to purchase new application software. I think even quickbooks needs to
be upgraded to their latest version.

Microsoft publish that information themselves.

Windows XP Direct OEM and Retail License Availability (end date) June 30
2008
Windows XP System Builder License Availability (end date) January 31, 2009
Windows XP Home Edition for OEMs to install on Ultra Low-Cost PCs. The new
OEM end date will be the later of either June 30, 2010, or one year after
the general availability of the next version of Windows. (Windows 7)
note: that a couple of the dearer versions of Vista include downgrade rights
using the Vista license to run XP as long as the Vista copy remains unused.

The note from Scott Dunn of Windows Secrets may help.
"Microsoft may not have planned it this way, but XP could end up rivaling
NT and 2000 as the version of Windows with the longest lifespan. According
to recent news reports, Dell, Lenovo, and other computer manufacturers
will continue to sell new PCs running Windows XP well past Microsoft's
June 30 cutoff date.
PC vendors will do so by invoking a downgrade plan that lets them ship a
system with Windows XP installed as long as the customer is also paying
for an upgrade to Vista Business or Ultimate editions, either of which is
included in each box.
Of course, computer manufacturers aren't the only ones looking for ways to
extend XP's usefulness. One pundit has predicted that Microsoft itself is
going to fast-track Windows 7 to get customers to leapfrog over the
unpopular Vista and go directly from XP to the next version. In fact,
according to the technology site Ars Technica, one major American
corporation, General Motors, is considering doing just that."

I don't know what Dell site you went to, but they are still offering XP. All
the stuff on Dells site is a PC they build for you, there is no special
order. Now if you want to buy it in a store, you may have trouble. Stores
don't want to admit that all the PC's they have are running on a OS that is
a POS. As I said Lenovo will still sell you a PC with XP also only it's XP
Pro, but if you like XP, XP pro is easy to use. MS has been saying they were
going to cut off XP, but they kept extending the deadline. They (MS) finally
had to admit that Vista was ME version 2, they screwed up big time with it.
That is why they have not cut off XP, and have fast tracked the new OS. XP
will be available until they release the new Win.7. I hope they learned from
the Vista screw up, but only time will tell.
As I mentioned though if you want an XP, I would not use Dell. If I had it
to do over again I would have bought the new desktop and 2 new laptops I
bought from Lenovo. They could not possibly be any worse.

That is exactly the opposite to my experience from Dell !
I understand that XP will be available as an option for some time yet,
particularly since M$ want the new sub $400 laptops to be sold with XP
rather than Linux.

Yep, Linux is still a small drop in the bucket in over all PC use, but Vista
has been a real great thing for it. It has pissed off a lot of people to the
point they are willing to try it. Even Wal-Mart is selling Linux Machines on
their web site. I am going to set up my desktop to dual boot with it and XP
to play around with it a little to see what it's like. I almost bought a
Linux Laptop from Wally to play with but then someone told me how easy it
was to set up one of my PC's with both so I could play around with it.

If you don't want to make any changes to your machine why not download
and burn some live CD's. Try "www.opensuse.org" and get one of the two
live CD's. There are two desktop choices "KDE & Gnome" ! I prefer KDE
but others like Gnome.
Stick the newly burnt CD in the drive and boot from it. You must have a
minimum of 512Mb ram. It installs nothing and runs entirely from the
CD. Don't expect it to be as fast as if it were installed though.
If you have a network card and broadband you will be able to surf the
internet and use usenet etc ! All from the CD.

The people that told me about the dual boot told me about that too, but
mentioned it would not be nearly as fast. The desktop from Dell has been the
biggest problem of the 3. It has already been formatted twice now, so I don't
keep anything on it I need in case I need to do it again. That's why I will
just set it up to fully run both so I can see what Linux is really like. If
I learn to like it I will then do my laptop and let the wife try it, see if
she wants hers done too. If for some reason I don't like it, it's simple to
just format it back to just windows now that I have done that one a couple
times, and there is nothing to worry about losing.

In that case go for it ! I'm often around if you want a little hand
holding. But I promise you its not half as hard as you may think. One
client I've got is an 82 year old granny that uses "OpenSuSE" and
can't understand why anyone would want anything else.

Thanks. I have done some reading on some groups for it, and it seems to have
a very dedicated bunch of people who swear it's far better than windows. I'm
sure the only problem will be getting used to something different. It could
not be any worse than when I learned. I came to PC's late in life, had
always avoided them. When I finally decided to learn I bought a new PC that
was Win. ME. I almost took it out and shot it a couple times. I then later
found it was not me, it was a really crappy OS. Shortly after Vista hit I
set up a co workers new laptop for her and I was thinking "MS has done it
again. Taken a good working OS and exchanged it for something that is a POS".
Hell after that I figure learning to play with Linux can't be that bad.
