- XP PRO installation problem.
- Posted by Malvin on February 10th, 2004
hoping someone can share some light on this problem.
it started on sunday late evening. when i switched on my desktop
computer, when it reaches the windows logo it crashes/freeze.it takes about
10 reboots before it loads as normal.after some hours of use,the computer
will crash thus going thought the whole reboot process.i thought it could be
a software problem, when i first install xp i did not choose the clean from
fresh option.so i decided to reinstall xp but this time as a fresh
install.but again i am having the same problem.before installing when it
reaches the windows logo it just crash/freeze.another 10 reboots then it
starts the windows installation, but shortly it crashes again.
does anyone know what could be the problem?
many thanks for your kind help.

tks for that, not sure if i should update the BIOS incase something happens
along the line i.e.crash/freeze then that will render my mainboard useless.
currently going though the section of removing components, to determine
which (if any) hardware is causing the problem.

At this point, I would try using a different outlet in the room, a
different surge protector etc... to see if you have a power issue...your
PSU may need a changeout eventually but the easiest things first...

It could be memory problems, heat, or the capacitors on the motherboard
may have deteriorated to the point they can't supply stable voltages to
the motherboard. It could also be a power supply problem. For sure,
it's something to do with hardware.

as u mentioned it, i did recently changed my surge protector.the last time
its was working was friday, didn't use the computer over the weekend right

The other OS's work, huh?
If the disk is not bad, then the only thing I can suggest is to change
out the case in case you have a short between the mobo and something...

What other OS?
You mean the other OS runs fine, but XP freezes at the welcome screen?
Did you reformat the drive before the clean install?
Can you give some details about the system (CPU speed, amount of memory,
disk drive size, etc.)?

yeah its strange that other os works, but not xp pro.
i'm not sure if the disk is bad, will try on another machine but with
different (lower) spec.
not being funny or anything, just trying to understand what/how will
changing the casing have an effect if other os are able to install? if lets
say there were some kind of short between the mobo and xxxxx surely the
other os will not fully install?

other os such as win98,wk2,nt4.0
yes,the above os installs/runs fine, whereby, xp pro freezes at the windows
logo (this is the 1st windows logo displayed, way before even starting the
installation).

Sounds like your hardware is fast enough
That is the strangest thing I've heard of. All other OS's load fine,
but XP won't. Maybe it is a bad CD. Nothing else makes any sense (of
course, this stuff doesn't always make sense, unfortunately).

used it. when i tried to power it up on sunday evening 9ish it took me about
10 reboots before windows loaded, but would crash intermitting period, then
the whole nightmare of trying to boot up.then i thought it was a window
problem so i decided to reinstall as clean, but it's not having any of it. i
will try the same cd other another lower spec machine and see wot happens.

I've had this happen with three different SpaceWalker (Shuttle)
motherboards. XP just wouldn't install on them.
I even tried just the motherboard, vga, power supply, hard drive, keyboard,
mouse, and monitor sitting alone on the workbench. I suspect the IDE chip
was the problem, but I was never able to prove it.

Yes, the IDE chip. When I used a 40 ribbon cable with the hard drive, the
BIOS would give a notice on boot up, that "No 80 ribbon connector...."
message. I got the SAME notice with the 80 ribbon connector. The message
would toggle ports if I used the 2nd IDE port instead. I never did get XP to
install on any of them. As you said, the other OS's would install just
fine.
