XP vs 98 current thinking?
Posted by Jim Scott on July 9th, 2004

What is the current thinking on Windows98 vs XP?
I moved from 98se to XP recently and have not noticed a big difference
except perhaps it's ability to reset itself instead of the BSOD.
I have to change computers again and it has been suggested that since I
use a lot of software/freeware/Firefox/tbird/etc, 98 works better. It
will be a clean install, whichever I choose.
Views please from those with experience of both.

It resets because there is an option ticked so it reboots instead of
BSOD, right click my computer and select properties.... somewhere near
the pagefile options you will find it. Might help you find out why its
crashing.

adn the general concensus was that most found Win98se more stable than
XP. This has certainly NOT been my experience. I recommend all of my
customers move to XP when '98 problems get too numerous. If they have
the right hardware, they are far better off using XP that a continuous
re-install cycle imposed by '98.

Well you're still getting the BSOD its just that XP by default resets
when you get it so you dont have time to read the message or often not
even see the BSOD. That "reset" feature can be changed, of course.

That actually wasn't a win98SE problem. It is probably a driver or ram

question, and you can accuratly determine the cause of instability. If
you're ever looking for work, call me, I can always use a tech like you

most of the time, even boot it up for themselves.
Sorry, but I'm having way too much fun with this one.

98SE, without a doubt. I only have XP because I have to (to test my
software) and I hate it.

I can't say I can foresee the future, but I would choose XP just because
it is less likely to get outdated in the near future. That means less
maintenance cause you don't have to switch later on. XP, however, is a
maintenance nightmare if you want it to run the way you want it to run,
rather than the way Micro$oft wants it to run. See here:

Not necessarily; If you've got the right tools (freeware of course) and / or
ask the right questions, XP by far surpasses 98 in this area (esp. with
what's already built in - you just have to learn how to access it and use
it)

I fix computers and it it much easier to use win xp pro
especially for more drivers supported and networking.

My impression is that you are home user without a
network with a software focus rather than hardware
peripherals connecting with USB. Win98se USB
support sucks in comparison to win xp pro.

How many USB devices do you have connected
to your computer? If the answer is one or none
then win98se will suffice.

Windows 98SE is pretty much unsupported these days, especially with
regards to new hardware development.

It will not be too much longer before software and/or accessories that
will not install or run on Windows 98 becomes quite common, just as it
is today with regard to Windows 95 and very often with regard to
Windows 98 Original as well.

Microsoft Office 2003 is one of the first of what will soon be a long
line of software products that will require Windows XP, or at least
Windows 2000.
