- XP Zip Function Missing ?
- Posted by Anne on October 23rd, 2003
Windows XP Home Edition .IE6 / OE6
Hi,
I was led to believe that XP had it's own zip/unzip function?
Mine is missing! Had to resort to downloading and using Winzip to unzip
a file.
I would like to know how I can get the XP one back, can anyone help,
please?
Thanks,
Anne.

Why the question mark? Either you were led (correctly) to believe it or you
weren't.
I doubt that. Where did you "look" for it?
Just for my information, are you perchance a blonde?
Sure. Go to "start", "help and support" and search for the word "zip".
Zip is built into XP but it's clunky. WinZip is still better. To created a
zip file in XP just go to "File"-->New-->Compressed Folder. To open a zip
file, just double click the thing or right click on it and select "extract
all".

Yes, XP has its own build-in zip utility.

Can't go to File- New- Compressed Folder, because it isn't there!
And that is why I posted!
I was told it was part of the XP OS.

How about: right click on the file or folder, select send to, select
compressed file.
FWIW, one of the PC magazines tested winzip vs windows xp zip on a large
file. XP zip took some 21 minutes to comprees the file, winzip took 44
seconds.

Yup. And it gets worse if you are adding or deleting selected files from
within a large archive. WinZip or any of a number of alternatives are way
better.

Cannot right click to send to compressed folder, because compressed
folder isn't there.

From what little I have read about Windows XP's zip function, I would
keep and use another unzipper. My 2 cents worth.
