Just to confirm, this error was displayed during the installation of yahoo
messenger? Which version of yahoo messenger were they trying to install?
There are a few different versions. I live in the UK but opted to install
the US edition.
Make sure the pc is running Service Pack 4, and all the latest windows
updates. The CoCreateInstance failure generally means that Windows cannot
create an instance of a COM object, ie most likely you're missing a file.
(You could run RegistryMonitor from www.sysinternals.com but it will only
tell you the ID of the COM object that it fails to create, which isnt much
use for you if you dont have access to someone on the yahoo messenger team.)

Thats what my daughter is using now. Yahoo, AOL and Hotmail to name a few
all work. My daughter had a problem like yours with Yahoo
and AOL Trident was a joke with crashes all the time. Just
a suggestion. Good luck
