Autologon
Posted by peter_cologne on November 24th, 2007

There are some questions and answers in this forum which skirt around this
issue but I can't find an answer to this specific question.

I have two PCs, one has been running XP since I bought it. I have
TweakUI and for some time have had Autologon enabled as described in this
forum.

I have just upgraded my second PC to XP and TweakUI, both installed from
exactly the same source as the first PC and I have set Autologon just the
same.

I shut down and the next time I start up, the Autologon works fine but then
the tick is removed from the box so it does not work on the following
startup. I
have to re-tick the Autologon option each time I start up which completely
defeats the object.

By the way, the user-ID I use to set the Autologon feature is defined as an
administrator and it is that same user-ID which is defined for Autologon ...
and that's the same on both PCs.

How can I stop that tick from disappearing?

Hi Pete,

Not sure what could be causing this and maybe someone here can help you out.
If all else fails you could make the change with TweakUI or read the
following KB Article. Once the change has been made, immediately open the
Registry Editor and export the keys that TweakUI changed. Save this reg
file with any name you choose and I would put it in the Windows folder.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;315231

You can then add a Silent Mode registry change in....

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run]

You will need to right click on the right hand pane of Run then select New
then String Value then give it a name. After that, right click and select
Modify and type in the command for your reg file.

A sample reg file command would be something like this.

regedit /s c:\windows\autologin.reg

The /s tells the Registry Editor not to prompt for conformation
c:\windows is where you placed your reg file, the path.
autologin.reg is the name you give your reg file.

Hello "SG",

I'm always reluctant to mess around in the Registry so will, as you suggest,
see whether I get any other suggestions. If not, I'll try yours so thanks
anyway for your feedback.

Hi Pete,

You're most welcome and in the mean time I will continue to look for a
solution as to why the setting from TweakUI is not holding.

Pete,

For got to ask. Have you tried Start_Run and type:
control userpasswords2

Uncheck the box that Users must enter a username and password, then click
apply or ok, and it prompts for the account name and it's password that you
want to auto login to.

Hello again SG,

No, I had not tried that. Tried it today, did as you described and
restarted. When Windows got to the point where it should autologon to the
defined user-ID, I got an error message. I should have written it down but
instead just pressed enter and was taken to the Welcome screen.

I then thought I would restart and this time write the error message down to
tell you (I think it started with "Unable to log you on because..."). This
time the autologon worked! Just lucky, perhaps so restarted again, and
again, and again. It works fine every time now!

I don't understand it but I don't have to!

Thank you so much for your help. I am extremely grateful!

Pete
