Hourglass for 10 sec when selecting folder
Posted by Gerry Peters on September 24th, 2005

XP is very slow to show the contents of a folder, if there are many files in
the folder, yet Win98 did this quickly. I know XP is gathering info about
the folder's contents, but maybe I don't need that info, I simply want to
see the directory structure of the folder.

Sometimes I wait 10 or so seconds when in Win98, I would be waiting 1/2 sec.
I have an Athlon 64 with a fast processor. Is there a way to stop XP from
trying to second guess what I'm wanting to do next and have it simply just
show the folders. I have some huge folders, so this so called feature is
more like a bug for me.

Any settings I can change, so XP won't do this?

Run disk cleanup and defrag your boot drive. I've had this same problem
on two new XP computers.

that didn't help, although defragging the D drive did help some. My D drive
is the problem, when I click on it it takes about 5 sec to display the
directory structure. It's a 200 gig drive with about 175 full. Lot's of
files and directories. Defragging my D drive made it some better instead of
7 sec it's 5 now. I liked the way Win98 would instantly show the directories

Oh the good Ol days

If you have many entries in My Network Places then go delete the ones not
being used and see if that helps. It did on mine.
