How disable automatic tooltips in Win Explorer?
Posted by Alex Coleman on October 5th, 2005

Using XP Pro/SP1. Win Explorer set to "Show Details".

I see tooltips appear automatically when I move my *cursor* from one
file to another in Windows Explorer.

In the past I seem to recall I would see tooltips when I hovered my
mouse over a file in Win Explorer or over an icon on the desktop.

Can I disable the "cursor tooltip" and enable just the "mouse
tooltip"?

You can of course remove any Tool Tip from an icon.

For each icon, simply right-click it and choose Properties from the menu that
appears. On the shortcut tab, change or remove the text in the box next to the
"Comment:" field and click OK.

And you can turn them off completely with a Registry entry like the instructions for
Disabling Balloon Tips here.

But I am unaware of a way to globally make some work and others not.

There are many balloon tips, tooltips, etc. Balloon Tips, Folder Contents
Info Tips, Explorer Pop-Ups, Show Info Tips, Start Menu and Notification
Area tooltips.

I think that you're referring to these...
Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
View tab | UNCheck: Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items |
Click Apply | Click OK

Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items
[[Specifies that a description of a selected folder or desktop item is
displayed in a pop-up window. When you select this check box, the pop-up
description appears even if Web content is not enabled on your desktop or in
folders.]]

The above setting has no affect on the tooltips that you see in the
notification area, like your clock.

There are eight registry keys related to balloon tips and tooltips that I
know of.

This is the tip found at your link:

Disabling Balloon Tips
Added 11/9/01

To turn off balloon tips in applications that support XP Themes:

Start Regedit

Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced\

Create a DWORD value of EnableBalloonTips

Give it a value of 0

It doesn't work. I've tried it months ago, it's still sitting in my
registry. I'm still getting popup tooltips
(http://www.geocities.com/cwghosty/ms...1109190381312),
and nothing seems to work

Anyone tried the program at
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/killtt.asp? Only solution I've seen
that has a chance or really killing *ALL* the tool tips since it
actually intercetps the TTM_ACTIVATE messages. I've investigated, but
not tried.

you know what to do)
