- How do I get rid of old startup items?
- Posted by siriusbliss on September 30th, 2005
How do I get rid of old and/or duplicate startup items in the system
configuration utility (start>run>msconfig...>?
There are still items in there for programs that I have either
uninstalled or no longer use.
Thanks,
Greg

Another way is to go to start/run and type "msconfig" (without quotes) and
hit enter.
The startup tab will allow you to turn off all startup items individually
and will also tell you where they are (shortcuts, registry keys, etc) to
delete them permenantly.

I already have them turned off. I want to get RID of them.
Thanks,

OK, so please remind me how do I run a vbs script file? Right now the
file just fires up notepad.
I'll probably just end up hacking into the registry.
Thanks again,
Greg

Greg,
From my first post...
Read instructions at the top.
Double click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done. Or
right click and select Open.
Sounds like you are right clicking the vbs file and selecting Edit. That
will open any vbs file in Notepad.

NO. I read your directions. Double-clicking opens it like a text document.
Nevertheless I cleaned out the items.

The .vbs file type probably has the EDIT action set as the default, this will cause these files to open in Notepad instead of running.
Open Control Panel / Folder Options / File Types. Scroll down to VBS (VBScript script file) and select it. Click the Advanced button. In the Actions section, select OPEN and click the Set Default Button. This should fix the problem.

MSConfig a tool coming with Windows includes a basic startup manager which
allows you to enable/disable auto-start programs. It does not however allow
you to completely remove an entry from the list.
This is where MSConfig Cleanup comes in! It scans the startup configurations
and allows you to remove any item that has been previously disabled via
MSConfig. Try it. It's Free!

The System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) is intended to be used as a
troubleshooting tool, not a startup manager.
