How to make details view default for dialog boxes?
Posted by . on March 12th, 2006

I have just finally upgraded to XP from Windows 2000. Most of the
tweaks to make the user interface work as I'd like were simple. One of
them was to change the folder/file view from icons to details. No big
deal making it apply to all folder views.

Here's the problem though. When I try to "save as" or open a file or
folder from an application, it will default to the icon view. Even if I
use the "view menu" that is available in the open/save dialog box and
set the view to "details," the next time I go in, it's the darn icon
view again. Two such applications that do this are Eudora email and
Irfanview image viewing. I think MS-Word (still using Office 2000) does
this too.

My office computer's XP uses the details view for everything, including
the file dialog boxes in applications. So I know it's possible to make
this happen. I just don't know how.

I don't know about Eudora, but Irfan and Word have their own little
filemanagers which are configurable.

Irfan's has a little 'Details' place to check, and Word's has a 'rack'
of icons for its configuration where the 'Views' icon is used to
configure it.

Thanks so much. I missed Irfanview's "details" place to check (it's one
of the three checkboxes at the bottom of the "save as" dialogue box -
I'd also missed the "keep original date and time" box).

Now for some reason, Eudora is also honoring the preferred details view.

Word 2002 Open and Save As seem to retain whatever view that has been set by
the user.
