Items cannot be added to Start Menu - XP P
Posted by srm on October 14th, 2005

I'm using WXPP.

For one program (link to EXE on the network), this EXE I wan't to add
to my frquently used programs (the ones above the line that are always
displayed). I can create a shortcut to the EXE, but when I try to add
it to the list, I get a circle with a line through it that I can't add
it. It shows up as a recently used program, but can't add it to the
top of the list.

Any ideas.

Hi Shawn,

Executables from a network share can't be Pinned to the Start Menu (Thanks
to David Candy for sharing this info). See the conversation here:

Workaround from one of those threads posted by Joe Rutledge:

<quote>

Here's the solition:

1. Move the file from the LAN drive to the local drive.
2. Create a shortcut. (lets you rename and change icon)
3. Pin that shortcut to the Start Menu.
4. Move the file back to the LAN drive.

Somehow that proceedure "tricks" XP. Otherwise I couldn't to it.

BTW, you'll see the "Missing shortcut" dialog, and you need to locate the
file by pointing to the network folder. As the Pinned items configuration is
stored in REG_BINARY values, direct registry editing is not the best bet.
