- No boot.ini
- Posted by Me2Ewe on September 24th, 2005
I hope someone can help me with this problem. I went to start computer and
nothing message said missing boot.ini and to put in original cd.
I have 2 drives c,e,f,g,h on one & d & i on the other. I put in the disc and
it showed all the partitions so i put it into I. Now I have a new XP Pro in
I: everything else is still the same except i cannot access other O/S's.
C:=XP Pro [Original]
D:=Server 2003
E:=Important Info
F:=Windows 2000
G:=Backups
H:=Drivers & Downloads
I:=Linux Stuff [New XP Pro]
Computer management shows I: as Boot & D: as Active & C: as System. All
drives are NTFS except I which is Fat32
I try to install anyhing and it goes to I, Boot.ini is on c & pagefile is on
I.
Any idea how to get the OS back to bootable
I can access all files but cannot boot into anything, I had a backup
registry that I tried but didn't help
Let me know if this message makes any sense. I don't know how boot.ini
disappeared, i did have problems with an error message about Norton
AntiVirus

C needs to be active.
The boot files should be on C.
Boot.ini should look like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows .NET Standard
Server" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Server" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional"

Should i not be able to make a boot.ini for all three O/S's and just make
the XP primary boot, The drive that has 2000 & 2003 server needs it too
don't they? . Would that not work?

The boot.ini files are in C: everything else is in I:
This doesn't make any sense to me.
Here is what the boot.ini looks like on C:
[boot loader]

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP

I don't understand how D can be active and C contains boot.ini.
Change the boot.ini to:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows .NET Standard
Server" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Server" /fastdetect

I know for sure Gateway does this. The D drive is active. small
partition, and contains the Restore files for the preinstalled OS.
C drive contains the boot.ini and the OS, really screws thing up; for
me at least and any other OS I install.

Actually "C" is the probably the "active" partition (specifically, the
bootable partition) on the primary physical drive.
As a result, the BIOS looks there for boot code, and the boot code reads
boot.ini and boots the appropriate OS.

D is active because it's the primary partition on the second hard
disk. Boot.ini is on C because C is the first active primary partition
(on the first disk) that Setup sees.

C is System which means that it is active.
D being on another drive is marked active.
If you removed the drive with the C partition, then D would be used as the
System partition.

Hey Ron I re-wrote the boot.ini as follows:
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP Pro-Old" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="2000 Pro" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="2003 Server" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINNT="XP Pro-New" /fastdetect
It worked good for awhile then it quit again, I did have a couple of error
messages that said:
Error Message #1: 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\1442554.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:056c IP:63 6f 6e 74 65 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Close Ignore
Error Message #2: 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\447723.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:056d IP:01af OP:63 6f 6e 74 65 Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.
Close Ignore
I have had quite a few 16-bit Windows or MS-DOS Subsystems errors lately
I put in my disc and installed XP again on another partition and made
another boot.ini like the last and its working again so far, but got another
message like #1 already. Any ideas on that!
Thanks for any help

After fixing the boot.ini twice, Computer management shows I: as Boot & D:
as Active & C: as System. All drives are NTFS except I which is Fat32
Checked twice no mistakes that is what it shows, when I restart to the old
XP C: shows up as System & D: as Active no boot so it must refer to C:
right?
