See if you have a system.ini and a win.ini file in the %windir% or
C:\WINDOWS.

If not see if you have a system.ini.backup and win.ini.backup file in
%windir%\pss or C:\WINDOWS\pss. If you do, copy both system.ini.backup and
win.ini.backup and paste into %windir% or C:\WINDOWS and change the names to
system.ini and a win.ini

I don't see how this will help with the drives problem, but should help with
the system.ini and a win.ini problem.

Both the systemroot\System.ini and
systemroot\Win.ini files are not required by Windows XP and
these files are maintained only for compatibility with older software that
does not use the registry to save settings. The System.ini file is used to
start and store information for drivers and services; the Win.ini file plays
a similar role for applications.

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the info. Ok, I went to C:\WINDOWS\pss and there were the two
backup files you mentioned. However, upon copying and pastings to C:\WINDOWS
and attempting to rename them I was greeted by an error message that
indicated that I couldn't rename them since they already exist. This
confused me since I could not see any such folders/files with that name.

I appreciate the brief explanation, but if I am having DvdRW & cdRw drives
problem wouldn't info regarding drivers be related?

Anyway, the error msg says they are there, so why do I not see them? I just
see the backups. Please advise. Thanks! Also please bears with me if I'm not
grasping things readily. I was a little confused at first when I read your
response. Thanks

Hello Again,

Upon pasting "%windir%\system.ini" (without quotes) in Start | Run and OK
a window openned with the title "Windows - Notepad ". There was nothing
visible in this window, and cursor was blinking in top left corner of this
notepad. The same occurred when I pasted "%windir%\win.ini" except title of
window was "win - notepad".

OK. You have system.ini and win.ini. But both of the files are empty.

Copy both system.ini.backup and win.ini.backup and paste on to your Desktop
and change the names to system.ini and a win.ini. Move them both to
C:\WINDOWS

When you get the...

Confirm File Replace
This folder already contains a file named 'fill in the blank'
Would you like to replace the existing file
blah, blah
with this one?
blah, blah

Click YES TO ALL to replace both files.

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the help. Your suggestion worked. After pasting and changing
names on my desktop I was able to drag and drop into the windows folders.
Checking Msconfig, the missing info has been restored. I truly appreciate the
help, Thanks again.
