removing invalid long folder entry (CHKDSK)
Posted by Stan Brown on October 6th, 2005

I set CHKDSK to check my C: drive upon the next boot. When it ran, I
got only one message:

> Removing invalid long folder entry from \Documents and Settings\XXX\Recent ...

(It gave my user name where I wrote XXX above.)

My question is, what does this mean. What is an "invalid long folder
entry"? I googled for the phrase and got nothing.

I'm not asking if the error was serious -- I can't imagine anything
in Recent Documents is serious since I don't even display it on the
Start Menu. I just wonder what an invalid long folder entry might be.

%homepath%\Recent folders just contain shortcuts, if they have anything at
all in them.

Install Service Pack 2 for windows XP, as the fix is inclued within it.

Alternatively, you can contact Microsoft to get the hotfix (tell them you
want the fix described in kb832978 (check that you are requesting the proper
fix for your operating system this one is for Windows XP... ) and they
won't charge you for it.
