- "Start Menu" icon showing on desktop
- Posted by Chuck on March 5th, 2006
Somehow over the past 2 days, a "Start Menu" folder icon has appeared on my
desktop. I honestly don't know how it happened but I would like to remove
it. Standard delete option will not work beccause it says it is required for
Windows to function meaning it is tied to the regular start menu itself.
But, I do not want or need the folder icon on the desktop itself.
Can anyone suggest how to safely remove it without affecting the actual
start menu itself?
Thanks!

Sounds like the Start Menu folder may have been moved to your desktop. If the desktop folder is
opened when you right-click on the Start button & select 'Open', that would confirm it.
To move it back to its default location:
Open an explorer window to "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop", right-click the 'Start
Menu' folder and select 'Cut'. Backspace or click the 'Up' button to navigate to "C:\Documents and
Settings\<username>". Right-click in a blank area and select 'Paste'

Thanks the for the reply!
The desktop folder didn't open on right click like you suggested.
BUT...
The fix you offered DID remove it like I wanted and did not affect the
normal Start button itself.
Thanks again!
