Why does the Search dialog always take so long to appear???
Posted by Michael Moser on February 26th, 2008

When I right-click on a drive or directory and select "Search..." it
always takes up to a minute (usually about 1/2 min.) until the search
dialog finally shows up. I find this extremely annoying! Why is this
taking so long? What is the system doing during that time?

Is there some option, tweak or something that one could try to reduce
this time?

Have you verified that you have no malware (zombified, virus, worm,
trojan, spyware, etc etc etc). Many things can slow a machine down like
that, including file corruption and installed apps and services that are
totally unnecessary or unwanted.

To prevent reinventing wheels, what have you tried so far? Any error
messages? What do you see in Event Viewer? Etc?

Yeah - I am regularly running scans. Nothing of that sort ever showed
up.

I know, but I keep my system rather "slim", i.e. I regularly go over it
with msconfig and other tools to clean up startup items, services, and
misc. registry garbage.

And it's really not new. I keep seeing this since years. At most a few
weeks into a new XP installation and Search starts to show up with these
delays but this time mine seems to get really bad...
