Advice Please: Realistic Landscapes

Can anyone tell me how realistic a 3-D landscape would be if made with
a program like Bryce?

Is it better to go out and get actual video footage to edit?

Thanks a lot.

hmm... well.. you should go look at the Bryce examples on line. It is
usually easy to tell the difference .. although Bryce output is very nice.

Also, click on the graphics.com link.

This is a very capable program but a steep learning curve:

You can create it in a program like Alias Maya. However, it might be easier
to just shoot footage, if you don't mind a weekend drive upstate.

I've just started learning Terragen. I think the landscapes look very
realistic, though you'll have to add your own trees, shrubs, etc. It's easy
to use and free for non-commercial use, cheap for commercial use, and can
(with a bit of learning) do animations. For true realism, you can also
import actual maps of actual places, apparently. Works on PC & Mac.

You can find it at:

I have no interest in the company, just a satisfied user.

After looking around, I've come to the conclusion that there are no
realistic 3-D apps that produce results that wouldn't look fake, so I
am going to have to try building small scale landscape models that I
can video before attempting to use an as yet undetermined editing
program to make them seem real.

I haven't yet seen the movie "Sky Captain"(which I read is the most
realistic to date), so any observations concerning the landscapes
would be appreciated.

From what I read, "FCP", "Maya", "Adobe After Effrects" where used by
the film's creator, so can anyone give me the *Windows* alternatives
for said apps?

Thanks a lot.

AFAIK adobe after effects does too...

FCP is to the best of my knowledge, only available for (recent) MAC
platforms

you might want to look at blender, http://www.blender3d.com/

i second the comments about skill and experience: it applies equally
to model making either in real-world or software.

if its only backgrounds you want, why not use an image and
green-screen (or blue screen,, or red.. ! [CSO] ) it?

You might also want to check out some of the model railroad
mags and get to know some of the people who do model
railroading ( they're everywhere !! ) Some of the scenery detail
those guys do for their layouts (like working on the same layout
for 15 years ) has tremendous detail and could work well for
you.
