- Advice on using Magix Movie Edit Pro 94
- Posted by TonyJeffs on February 18th, 2005
I'm starting to understand this excellent program...It has so many
features, and is intuitively designed. You can change the brightness,
contrast, colour, zoom of a movie, enhance the sound & vid in
different ways, use special effects. All for 20ukp from ebay.
I'm just playing with it for a few days before I attempt anything
serious, but am puzzled by a few things.
I have copied several VHS family movies to dvd using a JVC dual
VCR/DVD recorder. I've figured that the key information in a DVD is
stored as .vob files.
It is possible to (a) simply play a vob file on MMEP, or (b) import a
vob file to a movie and play it from the movie.
Mostly it works fine, but with some vob files, I get incorrect or
inconsistant results which I'd like to understand.
Some examples,
1)There is a one-gigabyte vob file (from a dvd containg 4 of them)
that will play correctly for 15 minutes if I just play it on MMEP, but
is of zero length if I import it to a movie.
2)Another one-gigabyte vob file runs for 15 minutes if I play it
direct, but stops short after 2 minutes if I play it from a movie.
Any ideas about either of these?
Is it something to do with file corruption caused by glitches between
two bits of camera usage perhaps? Maybe when this happens, I need to
avoid recording the joins.
Thanks
Tony
I've copied a VHS family movie to dvd using a JVC dual VCR/DVD
recorder.
I have 4 vob files of 1 gigabyte each, plus one vob file of 250meg.
The first two vobs contain 15 mins of footage each.
The third will play for 15 minutes if I simply play it on Movie Edit
Pro,
but if I import it into a movie, it is empty.
More accurately, it shows as 15 minutes (at the bottome of the movie
clapper board) while it's loading, but suddenly switches to 0:00:00
when it's finished, and theres nothing in it.
..........
Then a different issue with another movie. One of the vob files has
the wrong soundtrack. If I play the dvd on the tv it has the correct
soundtrack.

I'm not sure how your "Magix Movie Edit Pro 94" might relate
to the "Magix Video Deluxe 2.0 Plus" that I have been playing with.
I know that in the USA, Magix was using the Video Deluxe name
for products that were labeled Movie Edit in Europe.
I also find the Magix Non-destructive Editor to be a great
improvement over the first Magix products I encountered and
a terrific value at the $10 it cost me.
As to the problems you related, my guess would be that it is
all related to the way DVD navigation data in the .ifo files
work with the .vob files. It is the case that the audio and video
data in a .vob need not be sequential and there can be other
data elements in between the A/V data. The .ifo files provide
the playback instructions, so that the DVD can be played in
more than one way and/or with several options.
In many cases the A/V data may be sequential and all in one
piece, this is why some times just changing the extension to .mpg
works. In other cases I suspect that some software has been written
to be able to "reconstruct" the correct A/V Data playback by some
analysis of the .vob. In others it maybe that they play the .vob
correctly only if the .ifo file is in the same folder as the .vob.

Thanks Ken,
That gives me some idea about the files.
After searching with Google, I think, as you suggest, 'deluxe' and
'pro' they must as you say be versions of the same program.
I've got around my problem by specifically copying the faulty scenes
in isolation from video tape.
..............................
You can do all kinds of modifications to the soundtrack. It'll
automatically search for a sample of camera noise, and then filter it
out. Amazing.
You can do ordinary things like tone control & graphic equalisation,
but - one frustration - I cant adjust the sound while it is playing.
I have to stop the movie, open the sound screeen, change settings,
restart the movie and see if I've achieved what I wanted.
Is that the way it is, or is there a better way?
(phone call have to rush out..)
Cheers

To be honest most of the advanced audio tools are way
over my head, maybe half of the basic ones also. I can
handle some of the noise reduction and the graphic equalizer
and it's cool that you can adjust plug-in/filters (Directx)
effects but some of the "Master FX" "edit" features in the
"Master Audio FX" rack like the "Compressor Dynamics
Processor" and the way the "Reverb" mix and the "Stereo
FX" sensor controls interact. They really look neat as if
they were mounted in a 19" rack, makes me think they
came out of a fancy Audio Effects package. It's odd
that they hide it all under the small "Audio Mixer" button.

It could be a bit more user friendly in places.
I can't get used to the copy-paste. It pastes where it wants, not
where I want.
Mostly, I need to buy a new computer. I think my Duron750 just isn't
up to this. I tried to save a movie to a dvd disk "Estimated
completion time 3 hours"
..................
Remember the old crackly 78s you'd hear on the radio?
But now when you hear them the sound is near perfect. It's amazing to
me how they can get rid of all the hisses and pops without losing the
intended sound quality.

Oh, I looked at making audio adjustments while a clip is
playing and it works for me, except that it locked-up, for a
while, a couple of times. That is on my Athlon XP +3000
with a Radeon 9700 pro and a gig of 400mhz memory, so
it could be that your system just isn't up to it. All I did was
to click on the drop arrow at the end of the audio track and
select an FX. That brings up one of those 19" Rack looking
controls, done that way they have a little playback control at
the top.
If you just want to adjust the overall volume, grab the middle
line of the audio track and pull it up or down.

Ken...
You're right. I was getting confused (again!!)
Its the Audio Cleaning rather than the Audio effects that I can't get
working while the track is playing.
