Analog Capture: Sony GV-D200 vs Camcorder
Posted by Jim on July 20th, 2003

I have a pile of old Beta and 8mm analog tapes that I want to transfer
to DV and edit and burn to DVD. I have a Sony VAIO (RZ26G) with all
their bundled software that captures realtime to MPEG2 (Gigapocket)
and uses a MPEG NLE (MovieShaker), but I have not been happy with the
video quality when I burn DVDs. I believe their is too much data loss
with a MPEG NLE (at least Sony's)

I would like to go with a DV NLE, such a Vegas 4 which sounds really
good in this group. I still need to convert analog to DV, but which
system would provide better quality for the old Beta and 8mm tapes.
Both systems would do the Beta tapes on a pass-through and the 8mm
directly in the mechanism. However, the GV-D200 states that it has
TBC and DNR which I understand would be very beneficial for old analog
tapes. I looked at the Sony TRV350, but it does not indicate that it
has TBC or DNR like the earlier Sony camcorders TRV730 ect. Any
suggestions or experiences would be greatly apprecited.
