- Analog DV converters

Other than the Canopus ADVC-300 and ADVC-110, are there quality analog
DV converters available from other manufacturers in the $200 to $400
price range?

Stick with what works and you can't go wrong.

YES!!! As pointed out earlier, the Sony DVMC-DA1is excellent
(it is essentially the same converter that is built into Sony camcorders,
but much smaller and more convenient to use since all the many
possible wire connections can be left in place for conversion of
analogue sound and video (both composite and "S") to FireWire to
send to the computer, and DV from the computer by FireWire for
analogue copying and/or for live TV viewing of the scrubbed/played
editing program timeline, and it also adds a 12 or 16 bit audio choice.
Yours, "for a limited time only", in mint condition, in original box, for
the "unbelievably low price" of $175 plus $10 shipping in the US.
Why do you keep asking this same question on this NG??? None
other is going to be both as reliable and as cheap as this Sony box.

You could check out the V-One Multimedia/Snazzi* products
www.snazzi.com
http://www.snazzi.com/Full%20Range.asp
While I only have experience with one of their cards, I have
used their Movie Mill capture software with another makers
card that uses the same reference design and chipset, as their
DVD III product. I have no complaints as to their hardware's
performance, but I haven tried one of their products that do
what you are interested in.
You might just try the Capture card listings at
www.videohelp.com and read the reader comments. You
should do so for more than a buying desision, but because
you can often find that there are alternative drivers or capture
software that can turn a dog into a real performer.

Do you live somewhere where you can't get them?
Are you a spy for a competitor? :-)
From years of feedback here in these newsgroups, the
Canopus products are practically the only current ones
that enjoy a near-perfect reputation. Every other alternate
converter has seen people come through here with some
kind of problem.

And that information including reviews of several other converters that meet
the OP's stated price requirements turned up on the first page of a Google
search for "Analogue DV converter". Dazzle is on that comes to mind as does
all the postings about problems with drivers. I would advise the OP to do
that work him/herself. Then, if a particular model is of interest, see if
anyone here has experience with it.

Thanks for the replies. Thanks for the info on the Snazzi products,
but I am looking for external devices (that connect to the computer
via FireWire).
The DAC-200 was a viable option up until it was recently discontinued.
It appears that there are no other converters being produced in the
price range I mentiioned (as no one has offered up any suggestions for
currently available products).

video is waining. You will find that there will be less SD equipment
available as time goes by and that your choices are starting to
become limited. You may find that you need to go with something
that is used or discontiniued, or be willing to jump to one of the
more expensive professional devices.

The same manufacturers will often have other models not
on the listing or newer versions. (Click on the blue "more info"
text for the entry. Then follow the links back to the current
products. The first listed item (ADSTech PYRO) is a good
example; it should lead you to:
