Any new VHS-DV converters out there?
Posted by JJO on February 25th, 2004

I had looked into this about a year ago, then lost interest. I'd like to
know what new "Dazzle" type hardware(but better) has come out in the past
couple of months, thats cheaper and more efficient than a year ago.
I need to convert many hours of Beta to DV, for Premiere editing (clean up),
and DVD transfer.
Sadly, my Panasonic DVC10 does not have passthrough.
Thanks.

Look at the Canopus website, you'll find what you want there. The ADVC-100 is a
very capable box.

They also have a DVC-300 which does a few more tricks. I am VERY happy with
my ADVC-100

Go look at Canopus. They have quite a few now and they are all reported to
be very good.

Nice!

I like the image stablizer/cleaner. Think this would be a must have if you're
working with a lot of degraded/dirty tapes.

Looks like that extra feature adds $175 to the price, but I remember getting a
Nikon LS-2000 slide scanner in part because of it's automatic dust/fingerprint
correction and was amazed at how well it worked, so I guess the $175 would pay
for itself pretty quickly if this really works (and from Canopus' reputation I
have no reason to doubt that it does).

FWIW, I'm still using a Sony DVMC-DA1 "because it works", and I'm very happy
with that even though they're not available anymore (gee, maybe because they
ignore Macrovision? ;->).

The ADVC is a really sweet converter. I think it's definitely worth
the extra bucks if you have lots of older VHS footage. ADVC300 was one
of our top 10 new products for 2003.
