I would not under any circumstances buy a battery or a memory card from
eBay. If it was to turn out to be crap and should they decide to be crooks
you have no recourse. I would take a look at the marketplace offers on
Amazon.com. If something happens and the battery is bad you have Amazon.com
to help you out if the buyer turns out to be a jerk. eBay in general is
about as helpful as a fly swatter for a person with no arms.

argue the opposite of what you say is true. If you buy from Amazon
marketplace, you are buying second hand from other people, who may send you
a dud and Amazon support can only do so much as a third party is involved.
However if you buy from an ebay shop, then you are buying brand new goods
from a retailer who just 'operates' through ebay. That way, you will
encounter proper customer service and excellent value. The other type of
vendor on ebay are private members (other people) and that is when you can
start to encounter problems with service and quality.

Correct, Ebay is no help in a problem, buy paypal is - if you pay through
them and there is a problem, you have automatic insurance up to £500.
Contact them as they don't like people messing with their cash and tend to
do something about it!

If you choose to buy a second hand battery from another person on ebay, or
from amazon marketplace, or from an advert in the paper, then who knows what
state the item might be in and you can probably kiss your money goodbye if
you get a dud.

Used items are clearly indicated on Amazon.com. It is very easy to find new
batteries, do it all of the time. The two times I tried eBay I ended up with
crap batteries, a seller that wouldn't replace them, eBay that told me I got
what I paid for and a PayPal that said the same thing. The one time out of
20 now that I have bought batteries from Amazon.com I got one that wouldn't
hold a charge and it was replaced. Amazon.com stands behind what is sold on
their Market Place I have bought a couple of books that were in worse shape
than indicated, when the seller wouldn't do anything Amazon.com refunded my
money. eBay is shit.

As for the memory cards well that are mostly fakes just like the no name
Chinese crap batteries. As the saying goes a fool and his money are soon
parted. Or, there is a sucker born everyday and on eBay they seem to
congregate.

battery - they only have a few years lifespan, so second hand will only last
a year or 2 at best?

Memory cards - definitely. An 'Extreme IV' for pennies - I don't think so,
which is why I said to check feedback before you buy. Check the feedback of
a vendor selling cheap memory cards and you will see several feedback
comments stating that the cards are fake!

However batteries don't have a read and write speed - they either hold the
stated amount of charge or they don't, so detecting duds is much easier and
it comes down to experience as to whether you trust ebay as a viable shop
replacement! I only ever deal with ebay shops, never individuals, so haven't
been stung in the same way as you have.

And they linger around 'normal' vendors, not in shops on ebay!
