- Archos AV500 under Linux?
- Posted by Henry J Cobb on September 22nd, 2006
When I plug the Archos AV500 into my linux system's USB bus I get the
following in /var/log/messages.
Sep 21 16:55:59 hcobb kernel: usb.c: USB device 6 (vend/prod
0xe79/0x1129) is not claimed by any active driver.
Sep 21 16:56:03 hcobb /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: ... no modules for USB
product e79/1129/0
Is there some manual configuration or upgrade needed?
I'm able to run USB sticks, camera and MP3 player, just not the Archos
AV500.

It claims to act as a mass storage device, which would be good enough
for me.

I almost bought one of those. How do you like it? Can you drag and
drop DIXV files to it or do you need to "recode" them?
I bought a Mustek PVR140, I love it, but you have to transcode every
avi into their format and their software takes awhile, like an hour or
so. Thinking of getting a DELL handheld with WinMobile 5.0 or a
Samsung YEPP player that runs Win Media 10. The DELL would be fun to
write programs for WIN Mobile5 OS.

I only use mpeg format so I don't know.
My current workaround is to use a Seagate 40 GB USB drive to bounce
*.AVI files back and forth between the laptop and the Archos AV500. (I
have to provide power from the laptop's USB bus over a power only cable
as the AV500 will not power external devices.)
Other than that it's a very nice unit and the quality of recordings from
both DISH network and VHS is acceptable.
Now to transfer my VHS collection to CDs and consider buying a DVD recorder.

The picture quality on mine is very nice. I watch movies at work while
I'm working at my bench. Now, if I could get cable tv streamed into my
PC at work... (I'ld get one of those Sling TV things, but I think the
IT guy would notice.)

Yes.
On the Archos AV500, go to settings, then system settings and switch usb
mode from Windows Device to Hard Drive and it works great under Linux.
