- Audio Video out of sync when authoring
- Posted by Leonid Makarovsky on November 26th, 2003
Hi,
I captured analog video on my HD in AVI Huffyuv2.1 compression, NTSC
29.97fps, 704x480.
Loaded the file into VirtualDub and started frameserver to feed it to
TMPGenc. I used NTSC DVD template. The settings were
2 pass VBR, 8000kbs AVERAGE bitrate (maximum was also 8000).
Motion estimate search: Highest Quality (very slow)
Video arrange method: Center
The option "Do NOT frame rate conversion" was checked.
The resulting video was MPEG2 with audio and video IN SYNC. The video
was about 50 minute long.
I then started ULEAD MovieFactory 2 to authorise the resulting DVD.
Loaded MPEG2. Everything played fine and was in sync even in ULEAD
test DVD player. When I started authoring, ULEAD first tried to
multiplex audio and video. I am not sure why it was doing it - my
source mpeg2 did contained audio. Anyway during this multiplexing
process ULEAD created VOB files that were eventually going to DVD-R.
These files were already out of sync. The further the video went the
further out of sync it was.
Anyone knows what the problem could be? Could it be with source mpeg2
(too high bitrate)? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It seems to me that you're wasting your time with 2-pass VBR at that
bitrate. I would use CBR.
Why did you check that?
Did you tell the Ulead program not to alter compliant files?
Assuming you have MP2 audio in your MPEG2 file, make sure the bitrate
is 384kbps. I've seen that Ulead program create audio sync problems
when using other audio bitrates.

My experience with DVD Workshop, not the movie factory, is that everything
in the authoring program looks out of sync. You must complile DVD and play
it on player, or burn it to DVD to see if it re-syncs. Sorry if this is not
what your looking for.

I'm relatively new to all this (still learning)... But if I use CBR at
8000kbs, what file size will I get? Will the quality improve?
About a year ago or so someone on this newsgroup posted that whenever
he was creating SVCDs with TMPGenc, they were out of sync whenever he
played them on external DVD player. He accidently found out that
checking this option will eliminate a sync problems. So just in case I
checked it.
Yes I did. It didn't re-encode this MPEG-2 file. The problem was
occuring during audio/video multiplexing.
I made sure that audio is MPEG compatible (not LPCM) and is 384
bitrate.
BTW, I found an interesting solution. I downloaded a trial version of
TMPGEnc DVD author, and burned the DVD with this program rather than
with MF2. The results were amazing...
Thanks.

I found out about this sync problem when I played the burned DVD on my
external DVD player. Then I tracked down the problem to be with MF2
audio/video multiplexing.

You should get the same file size you get with 2-pass VBR the way you
were doing it (8000kbps for both average and maximum). The quality
should be the same, but it will take about half as long to encode.
2-pass VBR is useful when you're using a lower average bitrate. It
ensures that you'll have enough "headroom" for the scenes which really
need it, and it allows you to conserve space during scenes which don't
require a high bitrate.
Here is what TMPGEnc's help file has to say about that setting:
Enable this to disable frame rate conversion. This is normally a bad
thing because it will cause a film's audio and video to become out
of sync if the source frame rate different from the selected output
frame rate.
Normally, this is not enabled.

Yep, I like TMPGEnc DVD Author better than the Ulead program. Of the
three or four authoring programs I've tried, it is the only one which
doesn't have any bugs that I've encountered. DVDLab is still my first
choice because of its greater flexibility in menu design.

Nice to know. Thanks!
Hmmm... Well, I captured at 29.97fps Huffyuv2.1... So my output is
29.97 as well... I guess I should be ok. But from now on, I won't be
checking it.
Thanks for the tips.
