bad stutter on vcd menu screen
Posted by Socks on February 2nd, 2004

hello, a first-day beginner here.

i have an ATI All-In-Wonder card which i've used to record enough under
WinXP to nearly fill my hard disk. so i tried using the Roxio VideoWave
Movie Creator 1.6.636.0 which came bundled with my PC to make a VCD and
offload some of it.

i have two clips on the VCD, and i can select and view either when i put the
disk in my Toshiba SD-2800 DVD player ... but i have to put up with a really
nasty stutter/flicker on the VCD menu.

is this a known problem with a solution? TIA.

Is it a stutter or a flicker? What does the menu look like? Are
there any thin horizontal lines? You may just be seeing the results of
an interlaced display.

it is uglier than that, the whole screen goes black, a snatch of the menu,
and black again. 1 or 2 cycles per second. i think i hear the DVD player
re-seeking to an earlier track. something is really not happy.

Have you tried playing the VCD on another DVD player? What about your
PC? You should be able to set up Windows Media Player to play the menu
DAT file looped, to simulate what the DVD player is doing. If it too
has the same symptoms of your DVD player, then your VCD authoring
software is doing something wrong. I'd recommend using VCDEasy.

i'm downloading VCDEasy to give the demo a shot. i could play the actual
clips on my pc or my DVD player. the menu stuttered on the DVD player and
"autoplay" just made seeking noises on the pc.

fwiw, i was able try one of my vcds in one of those portable dvd players
(the ones that look like notebook computers) and the menus worked there.
so, since the UI for the Roxio tools are very easy, i think i'll stick with
them ... and update my player at a later date.

thanks for the help.
